The capital of delight Graz harbours a wealth of artistic treasures and its historical heritage has been classified as so valuable that Graz has been added to the World Heritage List.
The mixture of southern flair and medieval atmosphere is unique and the list of top tips is correspondingly long. And just outside the city gates, paradisiacal excursion destinations await:
Mountain biking on Graz's local mountain, the Schöckl, romantic hikes, cycling tours, adventures in stalactite caves, golfing in Thal, Andritz or at the Murhof in Frohnleiten, the Bärenschütz-Gorge with its 24 thundering waterfalls. The *Lurgrotte, just "next door", is also a natural spectacle in a class of its own: special lighting effects make the huge stalactites appear even more bizarre.
If you think that culture is only available in the city, you can be convinced otherwise at the Stübing Open-Air Museum with its 90 lovingly restored historic farmhouses. Or admire the Church of St James in Thal, designed by the painter Prof. Ernst Fuchs. You can even visit a monastery at any time: Rein Abbey, the oldest Cistercian monastery in the world, opens its doors to you.
A stay in the Graz region is also always an excursion into Styrian cuisine: a fried chicken or salad with pumpkin seed oil is a must.
