Interlaken, pure Switzerland
In the Interlaken holiday region you experience Switzerland par excellence. At the feet of the eternally white summits of the Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau lie palm-studded lake shores, a meeting place for centuries-old customs and top events with an international appeal.
The rolling hills of the Mittelland become more rugged, the valleys deeper, the villages smaller. Nestling in the unique cultural and natural landscape of the Bernese Oberland is the Interlaken holiday region. The small town is the touristic centre of the region and a meeting place for guests from all over the world. The region’s largest town is Thun. Overlooked by its medieval castle, Thun’s old-town quarter is home to trendy locales and traditional shops. A place where customs and folklore are consciously cultivated.
Palms and eternal ice
The towns and villages are surrounded by a landscape that is simply beyond compare. The three icy giants – the Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau – and the summits of the pre-Alps tower above the almost Mediterranean scenery of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Mountain rail & cableways provide access to the most spectacular vantage points. The highpoint, in the truest sense of the word, is the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe. The cogwheel railway carries passengers up to Europe’s highest-altitude railway station in the heart of eternal ice.
From active to adventurous. Everything to make a sports lover’s heart beat faster is to be had in the Interlaken holiday region where guests can get adrenalin kicks on the water as well as in the air. Paragliders circling overhead before landing on the Höhematte meadow are an everyday part of the Interlaken scene. The region is criss-crossed by an extensive network of hiking trails from easy to demanding. There is also a wider range of tours for cyclists and bikers of all abilities. The superbly located 18-hole golf course in Unterseen rounds off the options for active recreation.
Winter sports & events
A little away from the buzz of the well-known winter sport resorts, the villages and towns around the two lakes are ideal departure points for thrilling downhill runs in the Jungfrau Ski Region, sunny winter walks and sledging. The smaller ski areas are especially family friendly and piste fun here is guaranteed to be no mass event. Interlaken attracts the masses when the region hosts many events of international significance: the events calendar is shaped by congresses and festivals, folklore and sport.
