Zurich - The Gateway to Switzerland
Zurich, situated at the heart of Europe and at the foot of the Swiss Alps, is the ideal starting point for exploring Switzerland. The Swiss Alps can be easily accessed from Zurich, with options for day trips to central Switzerland's Titlis or the Bernese Jungfraujoch.
Sightseeing in Zurich
Zurich's main attractions include the beautifully preserved Old Town, the Grossmünster with its Romanesque crypt, the Bahnhofstrasse with its countless boutiques, the Paradeplatz – the center of Switzerland's banking world – and, of course, Lake Zurich. All these sights are located in Zurich's city center and can be easily reached on foot or by public transport.
For culture enthusiasts, a visit to the Museum Rietberg, the Kunsthaus, and the Swiss National Museum is worthwhile. Enjoy a performance at the Opera House or the Schauspielhaus, or trace the roots of Dadaism, which originated in Zurich at the beginning of the 20th century, specifically at the Cabaret Voltaire.
Nature lovers can take a trip to the Uetliberg, Zurich’s local mountain, or visit the wildlife at the Zurich Zoo. A highlight is, of course, a boat trip on Lake Zurich or a walk along the lakeside promenade.
Relaxation and Activity in Abundant Nature
Zurich is one-third blossoming nature. A unique natural world beyond the city hustle can be found on Zurich’s local mountain, the Uetliberg. You can reach the car-free hill with a magnificent view over Zurich, the lake, and the snow-capped Alps on the horizon by train or cable car. One of the largest mixed forests north of the Alps in Switzerland offers countless trails for hiking, cycling, biking, horse riding, or walking. In the nearby wilderness park, native animals from foxes to marmots can be observed almost in their natural habitat. The 27-hectare Zurich Zoo hosts even more animal species and immerses visitors in the tropical climate of Madagascar all year round in the Masoala Rainforest. At Knie’s Children's Zoo in Rapperswil, animals are also at the forefront, with some available for petting and riding, including elephants and camels. A true paradise of action can be found at Atzmännig. With a summer toboggan run, slide paradise, rope park, trampolines, hiking trails, and more, the mountain amusement park excites children and adults every day.
