Massa, ursprünglich Massa Cybea liegt an der ehemaligen Konsularstraße Aemilia Scauri, die von Pisa nach Luni führte. Im 19. Jahrhundert, nach der Annexion an das Herzogtum Modena, wurde es als Massa Ducale bezeichnet.
