Maikammer

Wine and recreation are at the core of Maikammer, a municipality in the middle of a sea of vines on the German Wine Route with about 4,300 inhabitants. It is located at the foot of the Kalmit. From this highest elevation of the Palatinate Forest (673 meters), there is a breathtaking view of Maikammer and the surrounding area. Thanks to the mild climate, not only grapes thrive here. Kiwis, lemons, figs and almonds grow in the gardens and along the hiking trails. In the Mediterranean garden, 150 predominantly southern plant species are assembled and displayed in an impressive potpourri over an area of 1200 square metres.
The municipality has been part of the international Cittaslow network since 2017.
There is hardly a municipality with such a high density of wineries as Maikammer. The long winegrowing tradition is continued by many young winegrowers. About 150 winegrowers cultivate around 350 hectares of vineyards. In the local vinotheque, the Weinkammer, 25 wineries present not only their variety of wines, but also sparkling wines and brandies. With a wine bistro and expert advice on tasting, this common project is the central meeting point in the citizens' house, Haus Rassiga. Directly above is the parlour of the community, the "Gute Stube", which reflects the glamorous lifestyle of wealthy landlords in the 19th century and can also be booked as a wedding chamber. Magnificent façades from the Renaissance and the Baroque periods can be discovered in the town centre. They offer residents and visitors alike an appealing urban ambience. In addition to gentle tourism, as a Cittaslow the main aim is sustainable local development.
