Here lies the "key to the Thuringian Forest".
Due to its favorable location on an important trade route, Großbreitenbach was already called that in the Middle Ages.
Today, tradition and modernity come together here in a special way. For example, when visiting the Thuringian Forest Creative Museum. In various exhibition areas, you can experience how people lived in and from the forest in earlier times.
You will also find the 1st German Dumpling Press Museum there. The preparation of the Thuringian national dish posed many challenges for our ancestors as well. Großbreitenbach is also part of the Thuringian Forest herb region. Therefore, a variety of herbs can be found in the herb garden at the museum.
You should also take your time to visit the St. Trinitatis Church in the town center. It is the largest half-timbered church in Thuringia.
The Rennsteig is only about five kilometers away from here. If you follow the marked path, you will come directly past the idyllic forest swimming pool. With 4,000 m² of water surface, it is the largest and one of the most beautiful outdoor pools in the region.
Your path then leads you further to the Hohe Tanne viewpoint. From there, you have a wonderful panoramic view over the slate mountains from the Barigauer Höhe, the Fröbelturm, the Meuselbacher Kuppe to the Großbreitenbach Biathlon Center. Almost at the end of your way to the Rennsteig, you will pass the Gypsy spring. There you should enjoy a strong sip of cool mountain water from the captured spring. As nourishment for your upcoming tour on the Rennsteig.
