The Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna is the oldest existing zoo in the world and has already been voted Europe's best zoo four times. Panda babies, young elephants and many other rare animals attract more than two million visitors annually.

In the summer of 1752 Emperor Franz Stephan I of Lorraine, the husband of Maria Theresa, took his noble guests for the first time to the newly built menagerie in the park of Schönbrunn Palace. Since then the oldest zoo in the world has existed in Vienna.

As early as 1906 a sensation was achieved at Schönbrunn: for the first time in the world an African elephant conceived in captivity was born in Vienna. The next world premiere followed in 2007: for the first time a panda baby naturally conceived in the zoo named Fu Long was born in Schönbrunn. In August 2010 the second bear cub was born, in August 2013 the third. In 2016 the twins Fu Feng and Fu Ban were finally born.

Today, Schönbrunn Zoo is one of the most modern and best zoos in the world. The animals' enclosures are particularly spacious and designed to be close to nature. More than 700 animal species - from the Siberian tiger to koalas and tank-rhinoceroses - live here. Highlights are the huge rainforest house, the large South American area and the ORANG.erie, which is the home of the Viennese orangutans. In spring 2010 the nature experience trail was opened. Since May 2014 polar bears can be seen again in the zoo: The new facility, the "Franz-Josef-Land", is 1,700 m² in size and offers the white giants enough space to let off steam. For the first time, the bears can also be observed diving. Every year, new spacious facilities and animal houses are added. Nevertheless, the historical charm of the zoo remains intact. The zoo is part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Schönbrunn.
