This winter hike gets off to an incredible start as the chair lift journey from Bellwald to Richinen offers a taste of the magnificent views to come. Once you’re at the top, take a moment to enjoy the sun terrace of the Hasestall panorama restaurant – the view over the peaks of the Binntal Landscape Park and the Rhône Valley is captivating. There’s even more in store on the leisurely hike into the valley towards the hamlet of Gassen in Bellwald: you’ll find yourself pausing time and again to enjoy the view, whether it’s the Fieschertal Valley in the west or the majestic peaks of the UNESCO Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch World Heritage Site in the north. Along the way, you’ll head into an idyllic larch forest where you can breathe in deeply and clear your head.

The starting point of this easy winter hike is the mountain station of the Richinen chair lift. The route then continues mainly on the west side of the ski lift through open landscapes and forests and back to Bellwald. For those looking for more of a challenge, the route can also be tackled in the opposite direction.

Weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains, without warning. Appropriate clothing is therefore essential, along with adequate supplies of food and water. In uncertain weather, turn back in good time. Do not venture onto glaciers without a mountain guide. Take note of the warning signs that point out the constant danger, especially the danger of avalanches.Inform others of planned route, and whenever possible, avoid going alone.

Take a break at Mutti, the most westerly point of the trail, and relax in the sun as you admire the landscape. It’s also worth taking a stroll through Bellwald: the highest municipality in Goms benefits from a well-maintained, car-free centre with the canton’s typical sun-browned wooden houses, stables and narrow alleyways.
