- Description
-
From Leukerbad, the trail climbs gently upwards through meadows and pastures and then descends through coniferous and deciduous forests to Inden. The path partly follows the route of the old Leuk-Leukerbad railway line and consists mainly of open paths without any technical obstacles. Take a look upwards and admire the imposing rock arena overlooking the route. After Inden, you pass by a restored lime kiln dating from the late Middle Ages before reaching the rock face of the Schattuflüe. Follow in the footsteps of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who reached Leukerbad in 1779 from Sierre on this historic path. After this passage, your field of vision gradually widens and the Rhone Valley reveals itself in all its splendour. The path takes you above the wine-growing village of Varen to the town of Leuk and then down to Susten railway station.
- Directions
-
This route starts near Leukerbad bus station and leads you to the sports centre, via the Dala river. Follow the path on the right side of the Dala, which takes you to Inden via wide, open singletracks. Keep firm control of your mountain bike, as hikers also use this trail. About one kilometre after the small village of Inden, the path branches off to the right in the direction of Varen. You will then come to the imposing rock face of the Schattuflüe, which offers a steep but short climb (approx. 250 metres) to a rocky ridge. Although the path is wide, feel free to do this section on foot if you are new to this area. The route then passes through the Varen forest, then through Stadilacher and Priische to the wine village of Varen. Continue on Veloland route no. 72 which runs through the village of Leuk and down along the Rhone to Susten railway station.
