Description

Whoever goes up and along the ridges of the Maddalene Group from Rumo immediately understands what it is all about: almost immediately one is faced with a really steep climb. From a distance the mountain range with its soft and green foothills presents itself in an endearing and gentle way, butht eclimbs in the core of the mountains themselves are extremely demanding. In consequence it is no bad thing to start by taking a secondary asphalted road which goes from Corte Inferiore to Proves and oits district of Matzlaun. From here one can choose to continue on the less steep main road in the direction of Val d’Ultimo or fce the steep alternative which goes up to the malghe of Maddalene. Choosingthis second option one is later repaid when coming back fdown and passing by the cosy ad welcoming Malga Kessel Bassa, Malga Revò and Malga Cloz, positioned as they are in a spectacular location with the most beautiful of panoramas: the Dolomites of Brenta, the peaks of the Maddalene Group and of Val di Non amaze. Add to the views the warm welcome and excleent cuisine and satisfaction is guaranteed. Once Passo Castrin is reached one comes to the main road which leads to the nearby Val d’Ultimo and then there is  the dirt road called “Neuer Weg” which on the territory of Alto Adige brings one to Passo di Brez, and from which one can come back down to the village of Lauregno and then on back to Rumo.

Directions

From the district of Marcena take the main road in the direction of  Corte Inferiore. On arriving turn to the north and on to the two Alto Adige villages of Wegele e Stablet, keeping at all times to the roads of the Pass, and which in some points are really steep, and then continue on to Proves. Up until the 1980’s the village could be reached only from the south, that is on the Trentino side. Thanks to the construction of the Castrin tunnel there is now a connection with Val d’Ultimo. With a quick and attentive look one will notice the different style of architecture and different disposition of the villages themselves. After a short downhill, one turns almost immediately to the left on to a side road in the direction of  Matzlaun, another Alto Adige village, and one where a long time ago mother tongue German speaking farmers organised a diaspora in the Italian speaking territory (“welsch”) of Val di Non. In Neuhaus the signposts tell us to keep to the left and take a steep cement road which goes up to Malga Kesselalm (if one finds the way up too steep it is possible to take a deviation via Matzlaun, and taking the main road which leads to Passo Castrin). Next there is another demanding uphill which passes through a magnificent larch wood. After 12.2 km of the route one finally comes to the first of the many malghe which are open – the  “Untere Kesselalm”. Turning to the west one takes the path for excursionists and which stand out in that they have many information boards as the way cntinues to Malga di Revo and Malga di Cloz. Notwithstanding that the two malghe are in Alto Adige, in summer they play host the cattle of the Trentino farmers. If one takes the time to read the content of the information boards, one learns a lot about the life and traditions of this land having a linguistic, cultural and territorial border. After the malga di Cloz the road slopes down towards the tunnel at Castrin Pass (km 14,3), and we head south on he main road. 200 metres further on (and not visible from the road itself!)  a bumpy path develops above the gorge, it parallel to the road. To reach the top it is necessary to push your bike along the gorge. Alternatively, one can decide to simply avoid this stretch. In fact, after 800m the highest variant opens out on to the road. After 15km is is importatnt to move to the east side of the  Rio Pescara and go down along the forest rad which is called "nuova via” and is in the direction of Passo di Brez (km 25,9) Cross the road of the Pass and once on the other side turn on to the forest path in the direction of Paso Cloz (heading to the south). Keep on this road until “Giovat” (the Pass; km 28,3) and then turn at an acute angle again towards the north, going down until reaching a total distance of 31 km. On reaching the tavern and shop of the village take the left turn and go down to the church. From here, cross a parking area and go in the direction of  “Sentiero dei Masi” (Höfeweg), and this will take you down steeply to Schmieden. Once reaching below, on the main road one will find oneself again at the border between Alto Adige and Trentino. Follow the main road beyond along the Pescara river in the direction of  Mione and then behind towards Marcena.

Safety instructions

The path connecting the malghe of Passo Castrin is used by many excursionists and we, therefore, ask you to pay particular attention.

Please note that the practicability of the itineraries in a mountain environment is strictly linked to the contingent conditions and is therefore influenced by natural phenomena, environmental changes and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this page may have changed. Before leaving for a tour, make sure the path you will approach is still accessible by contacting the owner of the mountain hut, the alpine guides or the visitor centres of the nature parks, the info offices of the local tourist board.

Tips

The path which connects Malga Kessel al Passo Castrin is rich in didactic content in that it has a number of interesting and informative boards which explain the life and the traditions up on the Alpine pastures and near the linguistic borders between the borders of Trento and Bolzano. It is certainly worthwhile to stop and read the particular explanations and so to understand more about the area you are crossing.
