Description

At that time, the Great Inselsberg was just one of many bubbling volcanoes. Information panels explain the difference between lava and magma and how rocks such as trachyandesite, porphyry and granite are formed. You can also read more about tree ferns and the Tabarz giant insect.

The walk starts at the tourist information office, from there turn right along the Lauchagrundstrasse, past the Märchenwiese with the Struwwelpeterpark and the Steinpark into the Lauchagrund. The Luther Fountain and the Tempelchen shelter are places to pause. Walk past the „Lange Bank“, the „Gesicht“ and the lemonade spring until you see two Geo-Park signs. Turn sharp left there into the Bärenbruchsgraben until you reach a crossroads. Turn half-right here to the Aschenbergstein. There you can enjoy a magnificent panorama. Descend from the Aschenberg and continue straight ahead (narrow path) to the Arno-Wiemann-Weg. Follow this to the left until you reach the Neuer Weg, which leads to the left until you reach a barrier. Turn left there until you reach Friedensweg. Then turn left and immediately right again to Zimmerbergstrasse, back to the starting point.
