The spa gardens were laid out in the 19th century in the English style and cover an area of 4.7 hectares. Planted with tree species from all over the world, including a sequoia (planted in 1876), it is an impressive contrast to the natural tree population of the Thuringian Forest.
In spring, countless rhododendrons unfurl their fragrant splendor. Here you can also sample the healing waters of the Ludowinger spring in Friedrichroda. This is just the right tonic for an extended hike to and on the Rennsteig. It is the natural remedy in the climatic health resort of Friedrichroda. By drinking it, you provide your body with important minerals and keep fit.
A detour to the nearby Marienglashöhle cave with one of the largest and most beautiful gypsum crystal grottos in Europe is recommended. On the way to the Rennsteig, you have a wonderful view of Gottlob, Friedrichroda's local mountain. Not far from the hiking trail are the remains of the former Schauenburg castle, the seat of the first Thuringian landgrave dynasty, the Ludowingers. On your hike, you will finally reach the Tanzbuche mountain inn. This is said to have been a place for summer solstice celebrations in the past.
Now it is only about 800 meters to Germany's most famous hiking trail. We hope you enjoy your hike on the Rennsteig. - Directions
