- Description

The hike to the 2,277-metre-high Großer Ringkogel in the Murtal adventure region can be recommended to all leisure hikers and families. You are never on exposed areas and the summit plateau also offers enough space to enjoy the landscape in peace. Remarkable: the summit cross is not at the highest point, which is marked by a large pile of stones. You should allow around five hours for the twelve-kilometre tour, which involves more than 1,000 meters of ascent.
- Directions
-
We start at the Gaalreiter farm and walk along a forest road to a prominent bend. A path then branches off to the Ringkogel.
The first three kilometers we walk through the forest, but with every meter of altitude gained, the forest thins out and after a little more than 700 meters we stand at the 1,956 meter high Repenstein, from where a flat path leads to the Kleiner Ringkogel (2110m) and a steeper one to the Großer Ringkogel (2277m). From the Steinpyramiede you have a very good all-round view. We have already passed the tree line and hike along a well-trodden path over a broad ridge towards the Kleiner Ringkogel. This is reached from the Repenstein in less than half an hour and there are impressive views towards Hochreichart, the Brandstätterkogel, the Maierangerskogel and the Seckauer Zinkens. The ridge now turns to the left and later becomes somewhat steeper. We cover a good 150 meters in altitude from the Kleiner Ringkogel to the Großer Ringkogel and, after three hours of walking and the obligatory summit cross hug, enjoy the wonderful panorama. The Geierhaupt and the Gesäuse can be seen to the north, while the Seetal Alps and the Größing can be seen to the south. On this day, however, we take the ascent route back towards the starting point.

Dress appropriately for a hike:
Wear weather-appropriate, durable clothing. In any case, the clothing should protect you from possible rain and cold or sun and heat.
Even low mountain ranges often hold meteorological surprises. It is not uncommon, even in June, for a cold snap to occur at higher altitudes.
Sandals, bathing slippers, even sneakers are not the appropriate footwear for a hike.
Use hiking boots with ankle protection. Make sure they have a good tread and grip. After rain showers, it can be very slippery in the forest, even in summer, on roots, leaves and stones - Tips
-
It is also advisable to take enough liquid with you, as there are no opportunities to refill your water bottles along the way.
