- Brief description

A great circular hike. The ascent along the ridge path is a little more challenging, but the reward is immediate as we hike along the ridge of the Terenbachalm.

- Description

This hike takes you "up high". We walk up to the Terenbachalm, which is known for its views and idyllic alpine flair. Although it goes "up high", this hike is also suitable for "hiking beginners". Starting from the Oskar Schauer Sattelhaus, we reach the Stierkreuz, hike along the "ridge" of the Terenbachalm and experience idyllic alpine scenery at its best. At the same time, we can put our geographical knowledge to the test and name the mountain pastures that we marvel at here.
- Directions
-
We start our hike at the Sattelhaus, where we follow the hiking trail marked 505 (towards Gaberl) in a north-westerly direction. The path climbs very gently. We first walk along a wide forest road, where we pass the source of the Katzbach stream. Then we continue on a beautiful forest path that takes us to an alpine meadow. We also cross this until we reach the Stierkreuz (= "bull cross") after about 45 minutes of walking. This cross is a memorial and commemorates a fatal accident that a farmer had with a bull here in the past.
Once we reach the bull cross, we enjoy the idyllic alpine landscape before turning sharp right (path no. 547a) towards the Terenbachalm. We hike along the pasture fence on a direct path to the Terenbachalm. Here we have a more difficult ascent ahead of us. This leads us through a shady forest and after about 20 minutes of steep ascent, the path flattens out again and we make rapid progress. We enjoy the idyllic "Kammweg" and after approx. 1 ½ hours from our starting point, we reach the statue of Christ on the Terenbachalm, which is approx. 100m from our path. Here we also meet trail no. 547, which would take us directly back to our starting point.
However, we stay on the ridge path and walk gently uphill over a soft carpet of Gemsheide on the "Schneid" of the Terenbachalm and are accompanied by alpine shrubs. We enjoy the idyllic view here above the tree line and after a short time see the summit cross of the Terenbachalm. After about an hour we come to the descent, which takes us to the Zeißmannhütte. Unfortunately, the hut is not staffed, but we should take a break here and enjoy the view. Good spring water is available from a natural fountain. The route back to the Sattelhaus takes us along the path marked 505. We follow the forest road, which takes us directly back to the starting point of our hike. After about 4 hours of hiking (including breaks and rests), we can end the day at the Sattelhaus.

- Equipment
-
Packing your rucksack properly makes many things easier: pack heavy items first. The water bottle should always be within easy reach in a side pocket. All items that are needed frequently, such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map, should be on top.
Emergency equipment belongs in every rucksack!
Clothing according to the "onion system" is always recommended!
A good pair of hiking boots is a good companion and should never be missing on the mountain!
Don't forget a blister plaster just in case!
