- Description

The Mugel is located in the heart of the Gleinalm Mountains at 1,630 m above sea level. A popular hiking and excursion destination is the Mugel Schutzhaus, which was completely rebuilt in 2010 and is open all year round. It is operated by the ÖTK section Leoben-Niklasdorf. The shelter is a long-distance hiking trail control point and has more than 50 beds for overnight stays. The physical well-being is also taken care of, warm meals are offered all day. The effort of the ascent is rewarded by magnificent views of the Mur, Mürz and Vordernberger valleys.
- Directions
-
Starting from the Niklasdorfgraben, from the Mugel winter parking lot it goes first along the forest road until you turn right after the hunting lodge on the trail. Of course, there is the option here to continue hiking along the forest road. The signposting is very good and you can't miss it. After a short time you will reach the alpine landscape around the Ochsenstall, where you can already see the transmitter of the Mugel. Passing this, the last short ascent to the Hans Prosl Schutzhaus takes place. Return along the same path.

Proper backpacking makes many things easier: pack heavy things first. The water bottle should always be within easy reach in a side pocket. All things that are often needed, such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map, belong on top. An emergency kit including blister plaster belongs in every backpack and a clothing according to the "onion system" is always recommended!
In winter, do not forget the snowlines or snowshoes (depending on snow conditions)!
