Description

An easy and scenic hike in the Murtal adventure region in Styria.Near the ruins of Fohnsdorf (Fanesdorf) is the "Styrian Heart", newly erected in 2020, and the Fohnsdorf Cross of Reconciliation, which is intended to symbolise commonality, openness and respect for all people. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1252 and rebuilt after its destruction in 1292. The ruins are the remains of the rebuilt castle, which was further extended in the middle of the 14th century and towered mightily over Fohnsdorf with 4 or 5 towers. Today the ruins are a popular destination for excursions and are also easily accessible by car. If you would like to hike the ruins and the surrounding area in the north of Fohnsdorf in the Murtal region of Styria, the Ruinen-Rundwanderweg is the right place for you. The hike is mainly on gravel and forest roads, making the entire tour easy to walk. The ascent to the vlg. Gstättner farm is identical to the hiking trail that continues uphill to Hammerleck. If you decide at short notice, you are welcome to extend the tour from the Gstättner junction and hike further up to Hammerleck or the Gaaler Höhe.

Directions

At the main square in Fohnsdorf (1), 736 m, we orientate ourselves by the yellow signposts with the inscription "Ruinen-Rundwanderweg". We go slightly uphill past the church, always straight on in the direction of Fohnsdorfer Graben. After about 450 m we come to a car park and a hiking overview board. We continue to follow the asphalt road uphill and after a short while we see the ruins of Fohnsdorf (2), 811 m, on the left. At the next crossroads, keep left and follow the gravel road uphill for approx. 2.3 km until you reach the crossroads at the farm vlg. Gstättner farm (3), 1040 m. Leave the road and turn right onto a forest road. From now on we hike along a long stretch of forest almost flat. At the crossroads, always keep to the right until you reach the Graben (4), 1029 m. Keeping to the right at the crossroads, we follow the gravel road slightly downhill until we reach the already familiar crossroads above the ruins of Fohnsdorf (2), 811 m. The descent follows the ascent road. The descent follows the ascent route, whereby we choose the diversions via the ruin and the reconciliation cross.

Safety instructions
A few tips on correct and fair behaviour in the forest: (Source: www.bundesforste.a t - 9/2020) Hikers should avoid visits to the forest about 1.5 hours before sunrise and after sunset, as wild animals are particularly active during this time. Plastic bottles, handkerchiefs, cigarette butts etc. have no place in the forest! Please make sure that you do not leave any rubbish in the forest. Camping and making fires are strictly forbidden in the forest! In principle, each person is allowed to pick 2 kg of mushrooms and berries per day for personal use. It is forbidden if the forest owner expressly forbids it.
