Description
The tour on the Kerschkern is one of the demanding tours in the Triebental. More than 1000 meters in altitude have to be mastered. Although the tour mostly leads over gentle alpine pastures, the steep slopes that border the cirque on the right and left should not be ignored. No matter which route you choose, the last slope to the summit has well over 30° and can't be done without good hairpin bends. A magnificent backdrop accompanies the tourers already during the ascent: the Hahnenkamm always provides an impressive photo motif. The view at the summit is overwhelming, only a few mountains in the region surpass the Kerschkern in height.

The descent from the Kerschkern takes place on different variants, depending on the conditions. Great pleasure prepares a firn descent from the Kerschkern in March.

Directions
From the Bergerhube, follow the forest road in a southeasterly direction. After a bend to the left, you cross a bridge, after which the trail branches off to the right (straight on to the Moaralm). Stay on the forest road for about 1300m and you will reach a crossroads. Either you follow the left road or you go straight ahead, a shortcut that after a short while rejoins the forest road. Following the road, you reach a stream that you cross without problems but mostly without skis. Now a large meadow is reached. You go into the valley and are already on the valley floor of the Schaunitzalm. To the right and left the cirque is bordered by steep flanks, also avalanche passages are located on both sides of the cirque. The tour is therefore only to be made in favorable avalanche conditions. One follows the valley floor, which becomes steeper at about 1700m. The valley you follow turns slightly to the left. Just below the Schaunitztörl at about 1900m the route turns north. One climbs steeply and with some hairpin bends in the steep hollow or to the left of it on the light ridge. Soon the terrain becomes flatter and after a few meters you reach the summit.

The descent is the same as the ascent.

In good conditions in the gullies or over the steep slopes to the NW of the summit down to the valley floor.

Safety instructions
You are in alpine terrain on every ski tour, therefore alpine dangers must be taken into account.

Consistent tour planning is required for every tour:

Weather report: www.zamg.at   , www.alpenverein.at   , www.yr.no

Avalanche situation report: www.lawine.at

The avalanche situation always depends on the current conditions. Ascent and descent tracks must be carefully planned and selected.

The steep slopes to the SW and NE that border the cirque are often avalanche-prone. The slopes to the summit are steeper than 30°. Pay attention to avalanche danger.

Crampons should always be in your backpack on the Kerschkern.

Tips
In firn, the slopes to the W and NW of the summit are good.

Schaunitztörl: destination in bad conditions.

Bergerhube, good soups and pastries!
