Description

In OberGraz you are spoiled for choice – but why choose when you can have everything in one bike tour? The gourmet & culture bike circuit combines sport with natural beauties and cultural highlights.

Directions

If you don`t want to miss out on the natural and cultural abundance to be found in Styria, then OberGraz is the place for you. Only here does the Mur Radweg cycle path run along the eastern and western banks of the Mur – a great opportunity to circumnavigate the region along a route of about 30 kilometres. On the way, many excursion highlights await you. Starting at Gratwein railway station, head upstream on the western bank of the Mur towards Stübing open-air museum. After visiting the "valley of the farms", the cycle path leads you past orchards to Deutschfeistritz, home to a famous scythe factory: here you can visit the last Styrian scythe factory, which was operational until 1984. You can experience how red-hot iron was processed into scythes using hydropower during fascinating tours of the production halls. Only two kilometres upstream, the Lurgrotte Peggau grotto is also waiting to be discovered. Austria's largest water-filled stalactite cave is a stunning natural structure that houses many endangered bat species. A tour of the grotto with an informative guide is an unforgettable adventure not only for children. Enjoy the rugged and gentle mountain ranges, while cycling back south along the eastern bank of the Mur to Gratkorn and from there to the starting point of the tour.

Equipment

A fully functional bike and adequate safety equipment are prerequisites for a good ride!

Safety instructions

A bike tour`s length and difficulty should correspond to your personal fitness and riding skills. When taking a break, do some stretching exercises to prevent muscle tenseness. A first-aid kit should be in your rucksack, as should a mobile phone (European Emergency Number 112), a repair kit, warm clothes, rain protection, lights, and sufficient food and drink. Riding on mountain bike, trekking and cycling trails is at your own risk!

Tips

The pilgrimage church Maria Strassengel and Rein Abbey are both cultural musts!

Additional information
If you want to add a cultural highlight to your experience of nature, visit the famous pilgrimage church Maria Strassengel or the oldest Cistercian monastery in the world in Rein. In fact, why not visit both?
