Description
Extensive water areas, reed zones and marsh meadows - the Haien-Koog offers a very special nature experience with a hiking trail around the southern reservoir. The Koog was diked in the years 1958 to 1960. Today, the national park and the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site are located on the outside of the dyke.

Especially geese will meet you in great numbers: Hundreds of grey geese raise their young in spring and summer. Thousands of barnacle geese graze on the meadows in the koog in autumn and winter, most of them as migratory birds coming from the Arctic.

But also for other waders and water birds the Speicherkoog is an important resting area all year round. Directly at the wayside and from an observation hut you can take part in the diverse bird life. So don't forget your binoculars!

The tour starts directly at the ferry port Schlüttsiel. From here the ferry goes to the Halligen Hooge and Langeneß and you can combine the tour with a stay at the Hallig.

Directions
Start the tour at the Watt'n Blick information center in Schlüttsiel. Go in a southerly direction past the hotel restaurant and on to the small gravel parking area south of the traffic circle. At the end of the parking lot you will reach a dike gate. Step through it and continue the tour on the top of the dike. After about 200m you go down the dike on the land side, cross the fence and road and pass through a small gate onto a gravel path. Follow the path inland between the Bongsiel Canal on the north side and the reservoir on the south side for about 500m. Turn right and continue on a dam that separates the storage basin from the agricultural land in the Koog. Past an old bird warden's hut the path leads you to the road. Here you turn right and follow the road for a few hundred meters until you again meet the sea dike and continue the path on the dike top.

A small detour leads you to a bird watching hut directly at the reservoir. Then follow the dike to the starting point of the tour in Schlüttsiel.

Important tips:

In 2020 the dike will be reinforced in front of the Hauke-Haien-Kooge. This can lead to the fact that in some cases you can only walk on the road, or that a circular route is not possible at all.A large part of the route is grazed by sheep. Therefore, please do not take any dogs on this tour and please close all gates again after opening them.

Equipment
With the right clothing your hike will be an unforgettable experience in any weather! Our tip: With wind- and waterproof clothing, comfortable hiking boots, a little refreshment and some sunscreen you will rarely go wrong at the North Sea.

For bird and plant enthusiasts, it is worth taking along binoculars and suitable literature - also as an app.

Safety instructions

In order to allow nature to unfold undisturbed, we would like to ask you to support nature conservation in the national park:

Please stay on the marked trails in the National Park and follow the signs for the protection of breeding and resting areas. And even if there are no signs: very nervous birds often indicate that you are too close to their breeding!
Please keep your dog always on a leash when he accompanies you on your journey so that he does not accidentally disturb breeding or resting birds.
Please do not leave any garbage in the nature.
Please do not pick flowers in the national park, because many plants enjoy a special protection. Instead, enjoy their sight on the spot.
Please keep your distance to flocks of birds and seals when you walk along the beach or along the water's edge.

Tips

Above all after end of the incubation from June until September, large groups of spoonbills can be observed.
