Description
Nowhere else on the North Frisian mainland coast is there a comparable variety of habitats as here in the area of St. Peter-Ording. The march of the Eiderstedt peninsula meets an extensive area of dunes, in front of it salt marshes with small and large tideways and finally a kilometre-long and very wide beach. Salt marshes and beach change into mudflats in some places.

During the hike you will pass through a small forest, enjoy the view of a vast dune area, watch birds at a dune lake and walk on the dike. If you like, you can make a detour to the beach with a view of the salt marsh and the tidal creek. In the National Park House you will discover the underwater world and learn interesting facts about nature and its protection.

Directions
You start directly at the train station Bad St. Peter-Ording (terminus of the line Husum - St. Peter Ording). After crossing Eiderstedter Straße, keep left and follow the path "Kehrwieder" through a small wood in the direction of the village. Turn right at the first opportunity and stay on the forest path. After a few hundred meters you reach the dune area "Maleens Knoll". A lookout dune offers a great view over the dunes and the beach. Follow the dune path to the next intersection. Here you keep to the right and again you will come across a grove. At the end of the path turn left towards the beach. You reach the dike and continue your way north. After crossing the beach path, the path continues as a sand path and leads you to a viewing platform with a view of the two dune lakes located east and west of the path.

After this detour, turn back and follow the path on the dyke in a southerly direction until you reach the beach promenade in the Bad district. Alternatively, you can walk directly along the beach path out to the sandbank and walk south along the beach to the Badbrücke bridge. At the beach crossing a cure tax is levied.

When you arrive at the beach promenade, you can decide whether you want to make a detour to the beach on the "Badbrücke" and take a look at the salt marshes and tideways around the bridge.

In any case, you continue your way from the beach promenade on the street Am Kurbad towards the town and should take the opportunity to visit the National Park House, which is run by "Schutzstation Wattenmeer" and is located in the building of the "Dünen-Therme".

Cross the parking lot and follow the forest path towards the parking garage Dünentherme. After crossing the street Im Bad, you will come to a small forest path which - following the signs - leads you back to the train station.

Safety instructions

In order to allow nature to unfold undisturbed, we would like to ask you to support nature conservation in the national park:

Please stay on the marked trails in the National Park and follow the signs for the protection of breeding and resting areas. And even if there are no signs: very nervous birds often indicate that you are too close to their breeding!
Please keep your dog always on a leash when he accompanies you on your journey so that he does not accidentally disturb breeding or resting birds.
Please do not leave any garbage in the nature.
Please do not pick flowers in the national park, because many plants enjoy a special protection. Instead, enjoy their sight on the spot.
Please keep your distance to flocks of birds and seals when you walk along the beach or along the water's edge.
