Description
Chirping larks in spring, flowering salt marshes in summer, large flocks of resting birds in autumn and numerous geese in winter - the Hamburger Hallig is worth a visit! Comfortably on a fixed route through the national park, you can experience a journey from the mainland through the salt marshes, over the dwelling mound to the mudflats in just a few kilometres. You share the path with sheep that graze on one part of the salt marshes. The largest part of the salt marshes is not grazed and can develop naturally.

When the water level is high, the path can be flooded. Then the way to the Hallig is cut off. To be on the safe side, it is best to check the tide forecast before the hike.

Three stations - the Amsinck-Haus information centre on the dike, the NABU station on a dwelling mound along the path, and a mudflat workshop on the Hallig - invite you to stay a while.

Directions
Start the tour at the Amsinck House. During the opening hours it is worth taking a look at the exhibition! Follow the road up the dike and pass the sheep gate on the right side of the (paid) barrier for cars. The path now leads you through extensive salt marshes straight out onto the Hallig. From spring to autumn some of the salt marshes are grazed and the sheep have become so accustomed to visitor traffic that they often jump up at the last second in front of pedestrians and bicycles and stop many a car for an extra slow drive.

After about 1.5km there is a small hill on the left hand side, the so-called Schafsberg, where NABU operates an information station.

Past the Schafsberg, there is now also a salt marsh information path on the left side, which runs parallel to the paved path.

When you arrive at the Hallig, you can take a look into the "Wattwerkstatt" and enjoy the view of the surrounding islands and Halligen from the terp.

At the end of the path at the edge of the Hallig there is an unguarded (!) bathing area. At high tide you can explore the Wadden Sea by swimming here.

The way back is the same way.

Equipment
With the right clothing your hike will be an unforgettable experience in any weather! Our tip: With wind- and waterproof clothing, comfortable hiking boots, a little refreshment and some sunscreen you will rarely go wrong at the North Sea.

For bird and plant enthusiasts, it is worth taking along binoculars and suitable literature - also as an app.

Safety instructions

In order to allow nature to unfold undisturbed, we would like to ask you to support nature conservation in the national park:

Please stay on the marked trails in the National Park and follow the signs for the protection of breeding and resting areas. And even if there are no signs: very nervous birds often indicate that you are too close to their breeding!
Please keep your dog always on a leash when he accompanies you on your journey so that he does not accidentally disturb breeding or resting birds.
Please do not leave any garbage in the nature.
Please do not pick flowers in the national park, because many plants enjoy a special protection. Instead, enjoy their sight on the spot.
Please keep your distance to flocks of birds and seals when you walk along the beach or along the water's edge.

Tips

You can ride the same distance by bicycle. Bicycles can be hired from the Amsinck House on the dike.
