You might find it more enjoyable to ride the gondola up to the hiking trails (the gondola runs from mid-May to mid-October). Once you reach the summit station let the “Ghost Train” take you up to “Ghost Mountain” on Gernkogel Mountain free of charge or you can follow the narrow road up past the Buchau Hütte Alpine Hut and then on to the Gernkogel Alm Alpine Hut. From here you have the opportunity to continue on around the wooded knoll of Gernkogel Mountain, passing it on the right. The trail leads along a wide saddle that will take you to Sonntagskogel Mountain. Follow the small footpath uphill along the ridge to the summit. To return, follow the same path back down to your point of origin.
