Description

A short (approx. 170m long), but difficult via ferrata in the area above the Erichhütte. A good opportunity to train for the longer via ferrata "Königsjodler". It's also possible to combine the via ferrata with the summit "Taghaube".

Walking time:

Ascent parking lot to Erichhütte: 1/2 hour From Erichhütte to entry point of the via ferrata: 1 hour via ferrata: 1/2 to 1 hour

Directions

You take the path to the Erichhütte and further in the direction of Mount Hochkönig.  At approximately 2000m altitude, you turn right where you find the entry point of the Grandlspitz. Staying on the right side, you get to the saddle and then you cross left beneath the scarp.

It takes about 40 minutes to climb through the via ferrata (140m elevation gain). From the summit, you climb down south-east into the saddle and then right into the wind gap (partially secured). Afterwards, you turn left, you hike around the back of the mountain, and you will cross the saddle where you meet the ascent path again.

The short, but nice via ferrata to the Grandlspitz loses its significance because of the via ferrata to the Hochkönig. However, the Grandlspitz-via-ferrata match up due to its exposure and difficulty to the Hochkönig-via-ferrata. The via ferrata to the Grandlspitz was built by Richard Franzl, mainly to use it as a training and test for the more difficult "Königsjodler". The via ferrata itself is already rewarding, but in combination with the traverse of the Taghaube (partially secured A/B) it is a wonderful and extended tour.

Even though the via ferrata is quite short, you mustn't underestimate it because it's exposed and demanding.

Safety instructions

Self-assessment:

Check in advance of every mountain tour your physical health and assess correctly your and your companion's strength, especially the one of children. Surefootedness and head for heights is mostly essential.

Planning and preparation:

Plan your intended tour very carefully in advance. Hiking maps and guides, as well as information from alpine clubs and locals, such as mountain guids and inn keepers of mountain hostels can be extremely helpful.

Equipment:

On the mountain you need appropriate clothing and equipment, especially sturdy shoes with a anti-skidding sole. Protection against weather and cold are essential, as the weather can change immediately.

Weather forecasts can be checked here: http://www.zamg.at/ or http://www.uwz.at/

Don't dislodge stones, as there is the danger to injure other climbers. Labelled section with the danger of falling rocks should be as fast as possible and with as much attention as possible crossed.

Turn back early enough! It's not a shame, but a sign of prudence. It is necessary, if the weather changes, if it becomes misty or if the path gets too difficult or is in a bad condition.

Tips

An ideal practise via ferrata for the "Königsjodler" to the Mount Hochkönig.
