Description
On its last official stage, the Salzburger Almenweg leads from Werfenweng to Werfen, the starting point of stage 1. You should plan between six and seven hours for the 17 kilometers of trail: there are still a few meters of altitude to master to the Elmaualm, but the effort is rewarded with wonderful views and refreshment stops. For some, Werfen is a stage finish while for others it is the end of their personal Salzburger Almenweg experience. Today's panorama allows you to see really far in good weather, where numerous peaks that lie along the 25 stages come back into view. Such as the Hochkönig, the mountains of the Hohe Tauern in the Gastein Valley, the Lower Tauern around Radstadt, the Dachstein and the Gosaukamm. The alpine landscape high above Werfenweng is incredibly idyllic. Here in spring, the Alpine rush transforms the meadows into a sea of bright colours, while in autumn the larches turn yellow and announce the imminent end of the alpine summer. It is the sun-drenched side of the Salzach Valley where you should take the sun with you in your heart.

Alpine Trail Refreshment

The Mahdeggalm is located on the south side of the imposing Tennengebirge and is a popular hiking and excursion destination due to the large sun terrace with panoramic views. Hut owner Kathi pampers hikers with real Pongau specialties such as strawberry cake or leaf fritters with sauerkraut.

Off the beaten track

Werfenweng has been a designated "Alpine Pearl" location for many years, which means that here the highest value is placed on climate friendliness and sustainability. All those who would like to spend a "green holiday" are in the right place here. For guests arriving in Werfenweng without a car, there is the so-called "mobility guarantee", which consists of a free local shuttle, an electric vehicle fleet for hire and the "E-LOIS" taxi.

Directions
The first section of the Almenweg stage 25 into the Wengerau is identical to the last section of stage 24: From the start of the stage at the valley station of the Dorfbahn Rosnerköpfl in the centre of Werfenweng, the Almenweg keeps left into Wengeraustraße. After about 400 metres, after a bridge, turn right onto a footpath that leads in a loop back to Wengeraustraße. After 150 metres along the road, the Almenweg turns left into another footpath that leads parallel to Wengeraustraße uphill into Wengerau until it joins Wengeraustraße again. Now continue to the parking lot at the end of the road in the Wengerau.

This is where the route of stage 25 separates from that of the previous stage – if you spend the night at the Dr.-Heinrich-Hackel-Hütte, you will now also follow stage 25 described here coming from above via stage 24: via Güterweg 32 you will reach the non-serviced Gamsblickalm after about 800 metres. Now the somewhat more strenuous part of the stage begins with an ascent of over 500 meters in altitude via hiking trail no. 32 to Elmaualm.

After a refreshment with the weekly changing hut keepers, you continue on footpath 32 over the Tanzboden in the direction of the Salzach Valley. Two turn-offs uphill to the Werfener Hütte are ignored and descending after about 2.5 kilometres you reach the Alpengasthof Mahdeggalm. There, the sun terrace invites you to take a break.

Past the Mahdeggalm, leave the access road on footpath no. 32 down to the right. After crossing a small stream (do not take the turn-off in front of it), head down to the valley on hiking trail 32 through a ditch to the Samerhof. Immediately afterwards, the path leads across a meadow to the edge of the forest. Through the narrow forest belt and the lower edge of the forest to the right to a farm with a narrow access road. The Almenweg now follows this road downhill in an arc to the hamlet of Lehen to a crossroads. Turn left and follow the road for about 400 metres and turn right at the fish ponds down the road to the Prandbauer in the direction of the Wengergraben valley. Past the farm over the goods road to the ditch - the Almenweg always follows the marked path through the Wengergraben and along the Wengerbach to Pfarrwerfen. Once here, you walk along the right bank of the Salzach downstream to Werfen, the end point of stage 25 and the starting point of stage 1 of the Salzburger Almenweg.

Tips
The Salzburger FIS State Ski Museum in Werfenweng reflects the love that Salzburg people have for mountains and skiing. The museum emerged from a private collection and takes you vividly through the history of winter sports on three floors and with numerous exhibits. These include the ski goggles worn by Fridtjof Nansen during his Greenland crossing in 1888, the first skis with steel edges and also Aksel Lund Svindal's Atomic Race GS12. Even passionate winter sports enthusiasts will learn a lot of new things here.
