Description

From the Sonneggbrücke, a forestry road leads through the forest to the Muggenfeldalm (closed) and the Maurachalm. You can take the shortcuts through the forest, if you like.

The first mountain hut is the Muggenfeldalm (closed), the second the Maurachalm. At the Maurachalm you will be pampered with delicacies from your their production. The Maurachalm is the most northern alpine pasture in Grossarltal and is particularly well-known for the exquisite schnapps. Sometimes the people on the mountain hut sing and play music. Ascent over the Auhofalm (not farmed) to the Kitzstein (Gabel). From here you have a wonderful view to the Salzachtal as well as the Hochkönig, the Tennen- and Hagengebirge on one side and the Hohe Tauern on the other side.

Descent from the Oberwandalm (closed) to the Karseggalm. The Karseggalm is probably one of the most rustic huts in the whole Alpine area and with its 400 years it is one of the oldest. If you enter the hut, you are immediately surprised. The floor inside the mountian hut is designed with loam and bark. It can be that the "Wehstatt", that is the "kitchen" in an old hut, is full of smoke. Here, as most people can not imagine, there is an open fire place. A specialty from the Grossarltal is made: the "Knetkäse". You will not get this in every hut, since you need an open fire place to smoke the cheese. Once a week, you can watch the Senner during the production of the typical Sauerkäse. Next to the fire station, a ladder is leaning.

You hike further to the Unterwandalm. After this day trip you will be pampered with delicacies from their own production such as bread, butter, cheese, bacon or sausage. Please book the beds in advance. When the Hirter (= man on the mountain hut) plays on his harmonica and the sun slopes slowly (the sunsets are very impressive here), it seems to be a cozy hut evening...

After your breakfast, the hike first leads you back to the Karseggalm. Ascent to the Oberwandalm and the Promaualm (both closed) to the Penkkopf and further to the Gründegg. From the Penkkopf as well as from the Gründegg you have a wonderful panorama view. Hike along the mountain ridge to the Filzmoossattel. Directly at the Filzmoossattel is a particularly beautifully designed gentian, which accompanies the hikers over the whole Salzburg Almenweg. From the Filzmoossattel to the Draugsteinalmen as well as from the Tappenkarsee to the Karteisalm and further to Hüttschlag is a part of the Salzburg Almenweg, which leads through the entire Pongau with 31 stages.

Approximately 50 m above the Filzmoossattel is the Filzmooshöhe. A slightly different, but beautiful summit cross attracts the hikers into its spell and brings all to briefly stop. When you turn around, you will see the Draugstein, which is majestically towering over the Ellmautal. This mountain is one of three limestone mountains within the valley and the clay on the Draugstein are said to be healing effects.

Two mountain huts await you on the Draugsteinalm, the left one is the Schrambachhütte, the right one is the Steinmannhütte. On both, there are delicacies from their own production (cheese, butter, bread, bacon, sausage, liquor) and on both you can also stay overnight. But please book the beds in advance! After a hearty breakfast, the hiking tour leads you to the Draugsteintörl. From here you have a beautiful view to the Tappenkarsee, the largest mountain lake in the Eastern Alps. You hike to the Gurenstein and further to the Karteistörl. Here you just have to turn around again. The view to Tappenkarsee is simply unique.

Gorgeous ridge walk to the Kreuzeck and descent over the Glettnalm area to the Glettenalm. Just before the mountain hut. The hikers will be rewarded with a powerful snack consisting of self-made delicacies. The descent is either via the forestry path or all those who want to be more sporty can take the hiking path to the Ragglalm (closed) to the Hallmoosalm (closed). From here you have the possibility to go by hiking taxi or drive your own car into the valley. Alternatively, you can also hike through the forest to Hüttschlag / Karteis.
