Description

For more than 25 years, WWF Germany has been active in the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve. The Middle Elbe office protects and renatures alluvial forest and creates floodpplains.

Directions

Experience nature conservation work in the WWF project area. You will learn how floodplains, Germany's most biodiverse natural landscape, are restored and protected over the long term.

The WWF tour begins at the Kornhaus with a fantastic view of the broad Elbe river to whose banks the floodplain with soft and hardwood vegetation extends. After a short time you will reach the heart and core zone of one of the last large floodplain forests in Europe and discover an uncultivated forest in all of its natural beauty. Wild, romantic, old oaks line the path and on your right the Elbe is your constant companion. What does it mean to create wilderness? What happens to a forest that is left to its own devices? Here you will find traces of typical meadow animals such as the middle woodpecker, the beaver and the endangered billy buck. Let yourself be inspired by the impressive interplay of these species. With a look over the Elbe, you might be lucky enough to see the largest native bird of prey, the white-tailed eagle. Hidden from your sight, the shy wildcat may be sneaking through the undergrowth in the thicket of the forest. On the well-paved and consistently flat paths, you will experience the renaturation of an alluvial forest and the meadow-specific vegetation up close. Take a short rest in the forest and follow the circular route back over wide meadows with an unobstructed view of solitary oaks, extensively cultivated areas and the dike. The tour closes at the Kornhaus, where you can stop for a break.

Safety instructions

You are in the core zone of the Mittelebe nature reserve between Mulde and Saale. The protection of the threatened flora and fauna is possible with your help. The paths indicated here must not be left. The beaches are particularly attractive, but should only be admired from the path, as these are important breeding grounds and ensure the survival of the rare little ringed plover.

Tips

The tour is also worthwhile in autumn and winter. Bring binoculars to watch resting waterfowl such as greylag goose, crane, cormorant and great egret. With a little luck, ospreys or white-tailed eagles will circle above you.
