The German Wine Route – Germany's first wine tourism route – runs through the wine region of the Palatinate. It begins in the south at the border to France in the wine village of Schweigen and ends after about 85 kilometres in Bockenheim – or vice versa.
You can enjoy impressive scenery on a trip along the oldest wine tourism route: Gentle vineyards into which the foothills of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Pfälzerwald-Nordvogesen meander. Castles and ruins visible from afar line the edge of the Haard. You should definitely plan some time for the small and large wine villages with their historic townscapes and a multitude of sights and vineyards. Here you can also go on a culinary voyage of discovery, because the best ingredients grow right on the spot.
So that you can really enjoy the wine and the countryside or even one of the numerous wine festivals, cosy accommodation awaits you, from a private room in a vineyard to a wellness hotel.

The tourist route along the German Wine Route is marked with the black grape symbol on a yellow background. You will often find this directly at or on the road signs that lead you directly through the Palatinate vineyard landscape and the small and large wine villages.
You start in Schweigen-Rechtenbach at the German Wine Gate which marks the historic beginning of the tourist route. On the historic wine road, the route travels via Oberotterbach to the spa town of Bad Bergzabern with the Südpfalz Therme (South Palatinate Thermal Baths), the large spa park and a tranquil town centre. The route takes you parallel to the forested Haardt Mountains through the wine villages of Pleisweiler-Oberhofen, Gleiszellen-Gleishorbach to Klingenmünster. A detour up to the ruins of Landeck Castle is worthwhile (Tip: View and refreshments at the castle tavern). The route continues through the wine villages of Eschbach, Leinsweiler, Ranschbach and Birkweiler, where it is worth taking a short hike to the famous Kastanienbusch vineyard. Via Siebeldingen, Frankweiler, Gleisweiler Burrweiler and Hainfeld, the route continues to Rhodt unter Rietburg. (Tip: Tour of the Theresienstraße and ride up to the Rietburg castle ruins on the chairlift). On the way to Edenkoben, you will see the Villa Ludwigshöhe Castle, built by the Bavarian King Ludwig I. You travel through Edenkoben to the Cittaslow town of Maikammer. With wide vistas, the route goes through Neustadt-Diedesfeld to Neustadt-Hambach. Here, majestically enthroned above the vineyards in the foothills of the Palatinate Forest, is Hambach Castle, considered the cradle of German democracy. You should definitely plan a longer break in Neustadt an der Weinstraße. (Tip: Winding old town alleys and atmospheric market square) Via Neustadt-Mußbach, the journey continues through the Cittaslow town of Deidesheim – distinguished as a haven of wine culture – to Forst, which is famous for its excellent vineyards. In Wachenheim, Wachtenburg castle towers over the Wine Route (Tip: View and refreshments at the castle tavern). Take time in the spa town of Bad Dürkheim for the graduation building and the idyllic spa park. The tourist route continues to the small wine village of Ungstein with its impressive Roman Weilberg vineyard. The route continues uphill via Kallstadt to Herxheim am Berg, the highest point on the German Wine Route. After Dackenheim with its golf garden, turn off towards Kirchheim an der Weinstraße. The tourist route continues through the middle of Grünstadt and the district of Asselheim to the destination of Bockenheim. The House of the German Wine Route is the counterpart to the German Wine Gate and marks the end or the beginning of the German Wine Route, just as you like.
