Description

The second stage of the Rheinburgenweg (RBW) starts not far from Remagen train station, crossing the Ahr Valley in Sinzig and then leading through a secluded forest to Bad Breisig. On the way, not only the plateaus of Ahrplatte and Mönchsheide inspire, but also cultural highlights, such as the castle and the basilica in Sinzig, or the relics of the Celts on the Hahn.

Directions

At the underpass of the B9 in Remagen you will see the RBW logo. From the Bergstraße you turn into the Viktoriabergweg and you can feel: this ascent is going to be tough! In Schlenkern, the RBW climbs uphill through the residential area, with the occasional wonderful view of the Rhine Valley offering a welcome opportunity to take a breather. After entering the forest, where you ignore the relics of the forest castle, it becomes flatter. After a few changes of direction you are at the Ahrplatte car park at the edge of the forest. Together with the Apollinaris loop, the RBW now leads over the high plateau. When you reach the forest, you can make a short detour to the nearby Jewish cemetery before following the RBW halfway left to an idyllic forest meadow. Then the forest takes over again. The Apollinaris loop turns right, then the RBW descends into the Ahr valley. After a significant loss of altitude you reach the edge of Bad Bodendorf. But the Peterstal road immediately leads the hiker back to the left into the countryside. Above the houses and gardens it goes through the slope flank, where beautiful views of the Ahr Valley open up. Finally, the RBW bends sharply to the right onto a stairway that leads past meadow orchards down to Bad Bodendorf. A diversion begins there, because after the Ahr flood, the original route of the RBW was interrupted indefinitely. Detour: At the crossroads between Hauptstrasse and Schulstrasse, walk straight ahead until you turn left onto Ahrweg in the direction of the train station. You cross the railway line and federal road and follow the Baederstraße to the Ahr, which you cross by bridge. Together with the Ahrsteig access route, it goes into the forest. Step by step you gain height, master a few crossings and finally meet the Ahrsteig at a forest playground. With this you hike leisurely down the valley and soon reach the first houses of Sinzig. Shortly before the roundabout with the Barbarossastraße you come across the old route of the RBW. Along the Barbarossastraße you get to a small park and you reach the castle of Sinzig. A few meters further, Emperor Barbarossa greets you with a stony gaze from the plinth of the monument. Then you can cross the street and walk through the park below the impressive basilica. Remains of the wall on the Rheinstraße bear witness to the long history of the former imperial palace in Sinzig. The following ascent leads through a ravine and across meadows uphill to the edge of the forest. At the top of the plateau, quiet forest hiking is the order of the day, until the Mönchsheide provides variety and the nearby estate lures you to stop off. The RBW dives back into the forest, passes a few stations on the fairy tale trail and leads to the forest clearing on the Trotenberg, where the yoga trail joins. Shortly thereafter, the Hahn refuge offers a great view of the Frankenbach valley before you hike towards the edge of the slope. There you will find Celtic traces and you can see Arenfels Castle from a swing bench across the Rhine. The steep descent to Bad Breisig is quickly mastered and after a short passage through town you reach the Römertherme. This beautiful stage ends at nearby Brunnenstraße.

Safety instructions

Wear suitable weatherproof clothing that will protect you from cold, wet, heat and sunshine.

Make sure you take regular breaks and don't overexert yourself.

Take enough fluids with you as there are sections without rest stops.

Wear suitable hiking boots/shoes which give you enough grip on slippery, steep, rocky and uneven surfaces.

Avoid any sections of the route which you feel are too difficult for you. Natural trails can quickly become wet and slippery in adverse weather conditions.

Particularly in autumn, you should be careful of uneven ground, roots, stones or holes that have been covered by leaves.

You need to take these kinds of adverse conditions into account every time you go on a hike.

Particularly steep and dangerous places are made safer with handrails or ropes. Please use these as safety aids. Handrails are not to be climbed on or used to get a better view!

Tips

A visit to the Roman baths in Bad Breisig is the perfect way to round off your hike.
