About the cultural and historical sights:The Rhine Falls are over 16,000 years old. It played a decisive role in the early history of industrialisation. It was regarded as an important transhipment centre for goods transported on the Rhine and as a natural wonder, the Rhine Falls also impress modern man. Enormous volumes of water (an average of 600,000 cubic metres per second) cascade from the 23-metre-high and 150-metre-wide river basin.Laufen Castle, a fortress first documented in 1123, rises high above the Rhine Falls. Around 1270 it was the seat of Baron Heinrich von Laufen. After many changes of ownership, the castle is now owned by the Canton of Zurich. It serves as a restaurant and youth hostel, while the moated castle of Wörth lies on a small island below the Rhine Falls. It was probably built in the 12th century as a customs castle. Today, the polygonal building serves as a restaurant with a beautiful terrace offering spectacular views, and Rheinau Abbey is definitely worth a detour - it would even be worth a trip in its own right. This masterpiece was founded in 778. Monks lived here according to the Rule of St Benedict until 1862. It was plundered several times in the Middle Ages and experienced its heyday in the 16th and 17th centuries. After the abolition, it was used as a nursing home. - The magnificent baroque monastery church (open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday / April, May, October 2pm - 4pm; June to September 10am - 12pm and 1pm - 6pm) was built in the 17th century. Gilded, life-size trumpet angels sit on the spires. Opposite the monastery island is a secluded bathing spot on the calmly flowing Rhine, the "Lottstetter Riviera" is one of the best and most popular spots on the Rhine. We reach it via Ellikon, a small but charming village. Note the incredibly high high-water marks with dates on the corner of the house of the Schiff restaurant on the river side.the covered Thurbrücke bridge near Andelfingen was built in 1814/15. The pedestrian footbridge was added later (1978) and in Marthalen you will find beautiful timber-framed buildings.
