- Description
-
With the almost 1,600-meter-high Feuerkogel, the approximately 17 km-long Höllengebirge, which shows respectable wall falls of light-colored, often almost vertically folded Wetterstein limestone on the north side, breaks off in the east above the Trauntal valley. For those who do not want to take the cable car up from Ebensee, there is a very rewarding ascent route from the Langbathtal valley, among others. This trail follows the alpine variant of the Salzkammergut BergeSeen Trail, which then continues over the mountain pine overgrown plateau to the Rieder Hütte.
- Directions
-
From the Kreh parking lot, cross the bridge over the Langbathbach stream and go beyond on the forest road to the left - out of the valley - over another bridge. Immediately after that, the signposted hiking trail to the Feuerkogel branches off to the right (No. 832). Soon you are hiking again on a forest road next to a ditch and - first turning left, then right - uphill through the forest to a hunting lodge. Then you finally continue on trail no. 832, over the former Pledialm (beautiful views) and through the wooded slopes of the Riedel of the same name (1,624 m).
Finally, hike under the cable car and up to the Feuerkogel (1,592 m). In its area you will find the Feuerkogel and Edelweiss mountain inns, the Christophorushütte and the Kranabethütte. 3:00 h
Now march west on the wide trail no. 804, towards the "Rieder Hütte". Pass the lifts to the Gasselhöhe below the Heumahdgupf, then follow the Haasweg, still marked with No. 804, down into the Edltal valley. Below the 1,707 m high Alberfeldkogel (which is crowned with the "European Cross" and can be "taken" in an additional 30 minutes) and the slopes of the Gamskogel, which are overgrown with mountain pines, climb higher through a narrow rocky alley and cross the wide karst slopes above the Große Totengraben, passing a short secured spot. Just below the Totengrabengupf (can also be climbed quickly), the route splits: on the right, between some knolls, you go directly over to the nearby Rieder Hütte (1,765 m) of the Alpenverein. 2:00
From there, the Große Höllkogel (1,862 m), the highest elevation of the Höllengebirge, and the Eiblgupf (1,813 m) invite you to make a detour (in each case an additional 1:30 h there and back).

- Equipment
-
For all stages you will need hiking or mountain boots with a treaded rubber sole as well as wind- and rainproof clothing.
A change of clothes and a small first-aid kit should also be in your backpack. How much food you pack depends on the number of stops you make. In any case, you should take enough to drink. Telescopic poles are especially helpful when going downhill.
- Safety instructions
-
In alpine terrain, pay attention to the danger of falling rocks.
Until early summer you can encounter steep snowfields or firn gullies - especially in icy conditions there is then an acute danger of falling and thus of death!
Due to storm damage, forestry work or construction work, individual sections of the trail may be temporarily difficult or impossible to pass.
Cows on the alp are often curious. Because they are mother cows, they develop a strong drive to protect their calves. Therefore, move quietly on cow pastures, keep at least 20 m distance to the animals and do not stroke calves under any circumstances! In case of threatening gestures (pawing, stamping) slowly move away backwards (do not turn your back). Dogs on a leash, they must not bark at cows or even chase them. In the event of an attack, it is essential to let them off the leash. - Tips
