Brief description
Without a doubt, the Hintergebirgsrunde is one of the most beautiful cycling routes in all of Europe. A large part of the route runs along the former route of the Waldbahn, which passed through the Hintergebirge for the last time in 1971. The flat gravel path along the Great Brook leads leisurely into the heart of the national park. From the parking lot Anzenbach to the Klaushütte, the route is also well suited for families with children because of the low gradient!

Description
From Reichraming you cycle without much effort along the Reichraming Bach on the Anzenbachstraße to the Anzenbach parking lot. Here you turn right from the public road onto the Waldbahnstraße into the Hintergebirge. Without any noticeable incline we cycle to the turn-off Maieralm.

After 15 kilometers you arrive at the Große Klause, the oldest hermitage in the Hintergebirge. Between the two tunnels you can descend to the gorge on a reconstructed piece of Triftsteig.

Now it is only a few meters to the Klause hut, which once served as accommodation for the lumberjacks. Today it is an ÖBf supply station for thirsty and hungry cyclists and hikers. The Klaushütte is open from May 1 to mid-October (depending on the weather) from Wednesday to Sunday and on public holidays.

After another four kilometers we come to the entrance of the Great Gorge. Here, at the Annerlsteg, begins the Triftsteig, a gorge experience of a special kind. This well-secured, approximately 2-kilometer-long gorge via ferrata follows the old course of the Triftsteig, which was formerly only equipped with narrow wooden footbridges.

The cycle path now leads through some longer tunnels of the former forest railroad. At kilometer 20 you reach the Schleierfall, here the Hochlachtbach drops to the Schwarze Bach and continues cycling along the Schwarze Bach to Weißwasser.

From Weißwasser, a former mining settlement, you have to pedal. 200 meters of altitude are now to be climbed in five kilometers. At the Hirschkogel saddle you have the possibility to make a detour to the Anlaufalm (managed from May to October). Here you can enjoy the wonderful panoramic view of the Reichraminger Hintergebirge while having a hearty alpine snack.

Without the detour to the Anlaufalm, it is only downhill from the Hirschkogel to the idyllic former lumberjack village of Brunnbach. At the Brunnbachstadl (open from May 1 to November 15, Friday 5 - 10 p.m., Saturday - Sunday & holidays 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.), you can take refreshments before continuing along the Plaißabach, slightly downhill, to the Maieralm. Here the circular route closes and you return along the already known route to the Anzenbach parking lot and on to Reichraming.
