Description

Most Rax tours in the Styrian part of the mountain range have the 2,007m high Heukuppe as their destination. Our hike, however, leads us to a less well-known, but by no means less rewarding peak not far from the border to Lower Austria. The tour is easily manageable for experienced mountain hikers and also offers two very rewarding refuges.

Directions
From Preiner Gscheid, the well-marked trail first leads over a former ski slope to the imposing Siebenbrunnenkessel. High above us we can already see the summit of the Predigtstuhl, but we still have to conquer the partly steep Waxriegelsteig.

This is done by hiking to the hospitable Waxriegelhaus (in the Siebenbrunnenkessel keeping to the right upwards) and from there tackling the trail. Always along the well recognizable, partly somewhat washed out path, through mountain pine fields upwards to the marked junction to the Bismarcksteig. Do not follow this path to the left (it is secured!), but straight up and in a wide left loop to the summit of the Predigtstuhl. A magnificent view of the Siebenbrunnenkessel and a panorama from the Vienna Basin far into the Styrian mountains awaits us.

Now on a wide path downhill to the soon visible Karl Ludwig Haus (bio-certified restaurant). Here we rest once extensively, before it goes over the newly renovated "snake path" in numerous hairpin bends downhill again to the Siebenbrunnenkessel and to the Waxriegelhaus. From there we hike along the already known ascent path back to Preiner Gscheid.

Equipment
Proper backpacking makes a lot of things easier:

Pack heavy things first. The water bottle (ideally: 1 liter or more) should always be within easy reach. All things that are often needed such as sunglasses, camera, cell phone or hiking map belong on top.

An emergency kit including blister plaster belongs in every backpack and a clothing according to the "onion system" is always recommended! For alpine tours, never forget rain protection!

Safety instructions
Most hiking and mountain tours in the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park are in alpine terrain. Especially for longer hiking and mountain tours, a good physical condition as well as surefootedness and a head for heights are recommended. On the plateaus of Rax, Schneealm and Veitsch orientation can be difficult in fog or bad weather. In winter always pay attention to avalanche danger!

Mountain rescue emergency call: 140, operation centers in Neuberg an der Mürz and Mürzzuschlag.

Tips

If you are fit enough, you can of course also "take along" the Heukuppe. In the valley, the Urani leisure pond awaits cool refreshment on hot summer hiking days.
