Description
The walk through the ravine in the Zellergraben is impressive because steep walls rise to the left and right. On the information boards you can find out how such a deepening can occur and why the loess walls are so stable. It starts with a road on which the driving grooves deepen with every rain. The individual particles in the loess have a predominantly angular shape due to the predominantly aeolian (wind) transport, which, together with the binding agent calcium carbonate and clay, give loess walls their high stability.

The base of the ravine consists of a gravel terrace of the Danube, which is from the Mindel period before 450,000 years ago. Loess preserved the legacies of modern humans who came to today's Austria around 43,500 years ago. Fanny, the statuette from Galgenberg near Stratzing, is a little younger, with 36,000 years the oldest art object in Austria made of greenish amphibolite slate and the approx. 29,500 year old Venus von Willendorf, which was probably made from an oolite from the Brno area.

Directions
From the Linden tree in Baumgarten we walk slightly downhill on the Zellergrabenweg in an easterly direction. To the right is the Göttweig Abbey, to whom Gozwin, the abbot of the Münsterschwarzach Abbey, mission benedictine of the Congregation of St. Ottilien, donated the area of today's Baumgarten around 1100, that looks down on the path. To the left we see Mautern and Krems and Stein with the Frauenberg Church towering over everything on the other side of the Danube. At the end of this path we come across the Zellerkreuz, a wayside shrine which was probably built in the 1st half of the 17th century where the Zellerweg branches off from the Steinaweg - Paudorf state road to the St. Blasien church. The branch church of St. Blasius from Sebaste of the Paudorf-Göttweig parish is the Roman Catholic branch church of Klein-Wien. The church is located on the so-called Zeller Weg, a pilgrimage route from Bohemia to Mariazell.

The wayside shrine has the shape of a strongly structured tabernacle pillar. A base stands on a square base. Above it rises an octagonal pillar with a chapter on which the tabernacle is placed. In the four deep, rectangular niches on the street side there is a statue of Our Lady, in the other niches there are images of Mary. At Zellerkreuz we pass to the left and follow a short stretch of Steiner Gasse in a northerly direction before we turn right into Zellergraben. Soon we see a sign on the left side of the path that announces the beginning of the Zellergraben ravine. The paved path is now sinking more and more between loess walls towering higher on both sides. On the left are the information boards that provide information about the origin and importance of loess. After about one km, at the end of the ravine, you continue a little further on the Zellergraben until you come across the Kellergraben at a right angle. Here you can turn around right now and go back the same way or you can walk south along the Kellergraben to St. Wolfgang-Weg, on which you can get to the parish church of Furth St. Wolfgang & St. Sebastian. The small detour to the establishment by a Sebastian Brotherhood, which has a preserved late Gothic choir from the mid-15th century, is worthwhile.

Additional information
The loess gets its slightly yellow color from iron hydroxides, which are present in calcium carbonate. Valuable, calcareous soils are formed from loess deposits, which can develop into black earth. Of the properties of loess, the good water balance has a particularly beneficial effect on plant growth. The amount of water that the soil can hold against gravity for two to three days is decisive for the water supply to the plants. Loess soils can hold water particularly well against gravity.

The usable water supply for the plants is the water in the middle pores (10 to 0.2 µm). In the loess soils dominated by coarse silt, the grain-related pores between the individual grains have a diameter that corresponds to middle pores. The difference to other soils is particularly noticeable in dry years. Loess soils therefore play a major role in viticulture, especially since some grape varieties can adapt well to otherwise dry environmental conditions.

Directions
Approach to the Linden tree of Baumgarten, the starting point of the hike.

Take the car on the B33 to Mautern. At the Mauterner Bridge take the Austraße towards the round about and from the round about the first exit on Kremser Street.

After a short stretch on Kremser Straße at the T-junction, turn left on St. Pöltner Straße to the roundabout. Take the 2nd exit from the roundabout onto Baumgartner Straße.

Continue straight ahead on Baumgartner Strasse in a southerly direction. Through the village of Baumgarten, where the street is now called Mautner Straße, you continue to the southern end of Baumgarten to the exit of the Zellergrabenweg to the left.

This point is easily recognizable on approach by the Cholera Column on the right-hand side of the road and the Linden Tree of Baumgarten on the left-hand side of the road.
