Baltic Sea, beech forests and chalk cliffs
The Hochuferweg over the white chalk cliffs of Rügen, which at 118 meters is the steepest cliff in the southern Baltic Sea region, is particularly popular among trekking fans. The tour takes hikers parallel to the chalk coast through the magnificent beech forests of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage in the Jasmund National Park. Repeatedly the Hochuferweg was chosen among the top 10 of the most beautiful German hiking trails.
The tour starts at the parking above the zoo Sassnitz in the Stubbenkammerstraße. From the end of Weddingstraße it goes with a view of the Baltic Sea along the cliffs. The Hochuferweg (symbol: blue bar) leads you directly to the high bank. The first viewpoint is the Bläse, a prominent chalk wall. Only a little further on you will find the legendary pirate gorge. The legendary pirate Klaus Störtebeker is said to have had his retreat here. In the pirate gorge, a staircase leads down to the beach. It is worthwhile, however, to continue on the high waterway. Via the Lenzer Bach, you reach the Wissower Klinken, the former landmark of Rügen. In 2005, the two up to 20-meter-high main pits of the chalk formation slipped into the sea. Immediately behind, the Gasthaus »Waldhalle« invites you to stop. The path leads you to the Ernst Moritz Arndt view, from which you can overlook large parts of the chalk coast. Over the 60 meter high bank, it goes to the Kieler Bach, which plunges as a waterfall in the Baltic Sea. A steep staircase leads directly to the waterfall down to the Kieler Ufer. Passing through the magnificent beech forests of the UNESCO World Heritage Site the Hochuferweg leads you to the small Stubbenkammer with the Victoria view. Here you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Königsstuhl, which you will reach shortly afterwards. The Königstuhl is the highest and most famous rock of the Rügen chalk coast. The white giant rises 118 meters out of the sea. In the National Park Center Königsstuhl you will experience a multimedia exhibition of a special kind. Rangers provide information on hiking trails, animals and plants and offer guided hikes. The National Park Bistro offers regional and ecological food. If you do not want to hike back on the beach, you can take the hiking bus (www.rpnv.de) back to Sassnitz. Or the high shore road at the bus stop for about 6 km right to follow in the coastal village Lohme.
