- Description

Not so long ago, the inner-German border ran along the lake Schaalsee and the river Elbe. For this reason, the landscape with its fascinating flora and fauna remained in its original state. This round tour runs through the former no man's land and promises unforgettable experiences of nature and history.
- Directions

The historic journey begins at the late baroque Ludwigslust Palace with its fairy-tale park. The following trip through the Griese area and the Elbe meadows is an interesting contrast to the splendour of Ludwigslust. Pine forests, peat bogs and heathland give the Griese region a rough face. Only a few kilometres further, the river Elbe flows lavishly into the wide meadows. Both the wandering dunes in the village Klein Schmölen and the Dömitz fortress offer a magnificent view of the river valley. Fascinating nature experiences can be admired here: Beavers building their castles, storks clattering, cranes breeding and sea eagles and grey herons gliding over the impressive river. The cyclists cross the former inner-German border with its original landscape several times before the small town of Zarrentin is in sight.
The Cistercian monastery in Zarrentin blends romantically with the steep southern shore of Lake Schaalsee, which also gave the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve its name. The tour leads along the eastern shore of Lake Schaalsee, the deepest lake in northern Germany. In the town Schlagsdorf, the museum "Grenzhus" shows, among other things, the construction of the former inner-German border using original components. The massive brick church of the city Schönberg welcomes its guests from afar. Until shortly before Schwerin, the path meanders through gentle hills and along forests and field paths. A detour to the state capital is worthwhile.
The region southwest of the residence city Schwerin enchants with its silence and seclusion. On the way back to Ludwigslust, cosy villages, charming small towns and shady forests entice you. In the middle of this idyll lies the famous Redefin Stud, the scene of historic stallion parades.
