Description
The starting point is at Giswil railway station: the trail begins with a gentle ascent through the Giswil valley floor to the first challenging ramp at Hinterbrenden. This direct ascent towards the Sattel pass requires fitness and a good riding technique, but offers impressive landscapes by way of compensation. As an alternative, the mountain road, which is not much used and well surfaced, can be ridden to Gruonholz.

From Gruonholz, the road is no longer so steep and leads past wonderful pastures and alps (Honegg, Zwirchi, Dörsmatt and Sattel). In Dörsmatt you can have a snack at the beautiful rest area and discover the technique of raft making. When you reach the Sattel pass (1584 m), you have views of the Entlebuch and the Hilferen pass. Also present is a memorial to the WW2 Polish internees who built this road.

After the Sattel pass, the bike has to be carried down about 70 metres of elevation loss to reach the road for the ascent to Seewenegg through beautiful pastures along the footpath. The route follows the road, which after a short while turns into an unmetalled road at the Bergrestaurant Stäldeli. Here you are challenged with inclines that are steep at times. But with so much nature to admire, you forget the pain and enjoy the ascent. Past Alp Schwand, depending on your strength and technique, there are a few sections where you can push your bike. Soon Seewenalp chapel and lake appear. The unmetalled road leads to Seewenegg and on to the Glaubenberg pass. Just below the pass summit you reach the pass road and follow it until shortly before Schwendi. Here the trail turns right and leads down to Lake Sarnen at Wilen, where you return along National Bike Route 9 to Giswil station.

Note(s)

On the Sattel pass you can stop off for a bite at the simple restaurant in summer.
