Along the glacier trail, from Glocknerhaus to Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe!

Kaiser Franz-Josef-Höhe (2,369 m)5.2 km
- Description
-
A footpath takes you down the valley from the Glocknerhaus mountain lodge to the Glacier Road, It joins Kraftwerkstrasse and leads to the 93 m-high Mooser and Drossen walls that hold the misty green Margaritze reservoir. We cross the flowing Leiterbach (plank bridge) and follow the Glacier Trail.
Approach Lake Sandersee, taking the rope bridge over the Möll river as it cascades powerfully down into the Zlöpfschlucht canyon. After halfway encircling the north and east of the shallow Sandersee, the footpath winds to the flat front of the glacier. From here, the sandy footpath and Glacier Trail proceed between islands of rock and along flattened moraines towards Kaiser-Franz- Josefs-Höhe.
At the point where we reach the glacier’s 1985 position mark, the Pasterze’s receding ice mass over the last three decades is dramatically revealed before our eyes. The Hofmannsweg joins the Pasterze glacier’s tongue here with an 80 m descent taking roughly ½ hr.
