Brief description

At first, the ascent takes place via forest paths or the summer ascent through the forest up to the Upper Valentine Alp. There, one dives into the mighty scenario under the mighty northern walls of the Kellerwand and Hohe Warte. Through the so-called Hochtal (high valley) the path leads to Valentintörl. For fit ski tourers, the ascent leads even further up to the Rauchkofel.

Description

A ski tour to the Rauchkofel is the spring classic in the Carnic Alps. After snowy winters, this tour can also be done in early May.

Directions

From the Plöckenpass road, first follow the road to the Untere Valentinalm and then continue in the direction of the Obere Valentinalm. After the Untere Valentinalm, take the forest path and shorten the summer climb over the so-called Schlangenbichl. At the Obere Valentinalm you reach open terrain and then hike southwest under the imposing north walls of the cellar peaks into the high valley. Following the course of the valley you finally reach the Valentintörl. There you turn north (right) and reach the Rauchkofelboden 2238m through a steep ascent (ski ev. tragen) and now ascend via the south flank to the western summit. The eastern summit (summit cross) is rarely climbed, because the summit flank is very steep. This requires a winter with above-average snowfall.

Safety instructions

After abundant fresh snowfall, this tour should be avoided at all costs, as large avalanches can release themselves from the surrounding steep faces and flanks.

Tips

In high winter, the ascent to the Wodnertörl (2059m) can be made from the Upper Valentine Alp to the north-west. This variant is shorter and, especially in high winter, sunnier than the dark high valley in the direction of Valentintörl.From the Rauchkofel you can also descend westwards over beautiful slopes to the so-called Angerle (~1800m), but then you have to climb back over the Wolayer See (1958m) to the Valentintörl to reach the starting point of the Untere Valentinalm. This variant is very rewarding if the snow conditions are suitable!

Directions

By car, take the B 110 from Kötschach- Mauthen in the direction of Plöckenpass until you reach a junction (Valentinalm) on the right hand side in about 1075m a few meters after the Heroes' Cemetery. Depending on the snow conditions, the dead-end road up to the Untere Valentinalm (1205m) is cleared or not.

Parking

Either at the turn-off from the Plöckenpass road or at the Untere Valentinalm.
