Description
The Carinthian dialect word “Marterl” actually refers to a wayside cross. But because the present-day pilgrimage church was erected at the beginning of the 20th century at the place where one of these wayside crosses stood, it kept the name “Marterle”. Interestingly, it is the highest situated pilgrimage church in Austria.

Be it for religious motives or the sheer pleasure of hiking in stunning surroundings: those who walk along this stage will be rewarded by a varied route along a river, through villages, on forest tracks and towards the end on wonderful, skilfully laid-out paths. The view is varied too, with fabulous views back to the Glockner mountain range, the craggy 3,000-metre peaks of the Schober massif, the Lienz Dolomites and, finally, the wild Kreuzeck range opposite.

Wegbeschreibung
We start in the village centre of Döllach, cross the main road and walk across the festival grounds to the River Möll and cross it on a footbridge. On the right hand bank of the river as you look at it, we reach the Glockner cycle path that we follow as far as the hamlet of Stampfen (municipality of Mörtschach). A short but rewarding detour leads to the Gartlwasserfall waterfall.

In Stampfen we leave the cycle path, cross the River Möll on a pretty wooden bridge and then take the main road. After a very short stretch along the road, we turn left and follow a meadow track (partly on wooden walkways) to the village of Mörtschach. We walk through the village as far as the church of St. Leonhard. The path is almost flat up to this point, but it starts to get a bit steeper now. First we follow a farm access road, then we walk uphill to the left, always following the signposting of “Rundweg Guggenberger” until we cross the Kolmitzenbach stream. Shortly after crossing the stream, we get to another farm access and turn right after a forest road, which takes us in several turns across the “herb meadows” at an altitude of approx. 1,500 m. Here we turn into another footpath, which takes us to a wayside cross near the Haselwand. The last part of this path is particularly interesting, with its steep terrain crossed very cleverly. The route continues to a forest road that we leave again immediately and walk uphill to the left, through a mystical “enchanted forest” and, almost on the flat, we reach the day’s destination, the “Marterle” pilgrimage church.
