Today's Rheinsteig (RS) stage to Schlangenbad begins right in the center of Kiedrich. The first worthwhile excursion is just a few steps away: a visit to the Gothic St. Valentinuskirche, which houses Germany's oldest functioning organ. Walk past the church to the junction into the valley of the Kiedricher Bach. Once there, follow the lively watercourse below the village to the left. After this first passage through the countryside, the RS touches the buildings again. But then he turns right onto a path that leads steeply up to the ruins of Scharfenstein. You arrive at the top a bit out of breath and feel a whiff of the Middle Ages as you walk around the ruins. In addition, a great panoramic view opens up over the Rheingau to the Rhenish-Hessian hill country. Excited you hike on and a little later you pass the "vineyard of marriage", where a vine is planted for every couple married in Kiedrich. The RS now dives briefly into the forest before it goes downhill with a right turn at the edge of the forest with great views. At a multiple crossing, a rest area invites you to take a break at a particularly beautiful vantage point. Then follow the RS to the left into the forest. Now leisurely forest hiking is the order of the day. Passing the new forester's lodge, the RS descends into the Sülzbachtal. The descent ends at the bridge over the Sülzbach. Now you turn right and you are in front of the Rausch forest inn, which tempts you to stop for a hearty meal in the countryside.
Well-fortified, you continue the hike and penetrate the quiet forest valley of the Großer Buchgraben. At the end of a forest meadow, the RS turns right over the stream and now leads through the eastern slope of the valley. You steadily gain altitude on the wonderful path until you pass the junction to Rauenthal. From here the RS strives back into the valley, where the Buchgraben is overcome again. At the confluence with the Bleichbach, the easy forest path forks and the RS now clearly climbs to the right. The steepest part is soon mastered and the RS, with only a moderate incline, leads to a large meadow surrounded by a forest. Orchard trees break up the area and at a junction a rest area invites you to take a relaxing break. Then you hike to the nearby edge of the forest and get back to the Großer Buchwaldgraben. One last time you change to the other bank. Shortly thereafter, the forest gives way to the right and a loose meadow orchard accompanies the RS to the next crossroads at the edge of the forest. Here you turn left and a little later you come to a well-kept Kneipp facility. This healthy refreshment is hard to resist! Then you hike on through the tall mixed deciduous forest and cross a hilltop not far from the Helmut Wagner refuge. Now the RS gently descends and slowly the first sounds from the valley reach your ears. Thanks to the good markings, you can easily master a number of forks in the path until the forest backdrop opens up and you reach the edge of the spa district of Schlangenbad. You pass the foyer, turn left into Rheingauer Straße and cross it. Today's hike ends within sight of the famous snake fountain.

Suitable weatherproof clothing - Safety instructions
-
Health and safety Wear suitable weatherproof clothing that will protect you from cold, wet, heat and sunshine. Make sure you take regular breaks and don't overexert yourself. Take enough fluids with you as there are sections without rest stops. Wear suitable hiking boots/shoes which give you enough grip on slippery, steep, rocky and uneven surfaces. Avoid any sections of the route which you feel are too difficult for you. Natural trails can quickly become wet and slippery in adverse weather conditions. Particularly in autumn, you should be careful of uneven ground, roots, stones or holes that have been covered by leaves. You need to take these kinds of adverse conditions into account every time you go on a hike. Particularly steep and dangerous places are made safer with handrails or ropes. Please use these as safety aids. Handrails are not to be climbed on or used to get a better view!
