Description: The unique Macun lake plateau with more than 20 mountain lakes of various sizes is situated within the Lavin municipality. The lake plateau is part of the Swiss National Park and is home to a large ibex colony, making it a particularly good vantage point from which to spot the “king of the Alps”. And while the deep blue mountain lakes are certainly the main attraction, the views of the surrounding peaks of the Silvretta range are equally captivating.
The ascent already offers wonderful views stretching as far as the Upper Engadine. Up on the plateau itself, it is well worth making a small yet rewarding detour to the Lai dal Dragun, a lake which, according to legend, is home to a little dragon.
Directions: From Zernez railway station follow the signs for Munt Baselgia / Lais da Macun. The route from Zernez is self-explanatory. On the way back follow the signs across Alp Zeznina to Lavin, the final destination. To shorten the overall hiking time you can also pre-order a taxi from Zernez.

Safety instructions: Caution: Snow fields are possible on the upper sections right through to the summer months. Zernez and Lavin are both easily reached by train and bus. This hike requires good physical condition (8-hour hike), sure-footedness, and the appropriate equipment.
Caution: sure-footedness, a head for heights, and good orientation skills in bad weather are essential.
