Description
The charming Engadine village of Sils/Segl lies idyllically between Lake Sils and Lake Silvaplana in the Engadine. The circular route via Clavadatsch and Muotta da Güvè starts and ends in the old part of the village, called Sils Maria. Surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Bernina mountain range, this high plateau used to attract poets and thinkers: Hermann Hesse made the elegant “Waldhaus” his second home, and Friedrich Nietzsche spent several summers in the village itself. Other celebrities that were inspired by the magnificent landscape include Charlie Chaplin, Rod Stewart and David Bowie. In winter, snowshoe trekking is a great way to explore these surroundings. Put on your snow shoes at the barrier near Furnaria Grond/Alpenrose (1,806 metres).

A short section of the route follows the winter hiking trail towards Lake Sils, passing just below the legendary Hotel Waldhaus and the sledge trail. From the Sils/Segl Maria Barchiröls boathouse, a first steep ascent leads through the God Laret (Rhaeto-Romanic for larch forest), where you will spend most of the time. Exceptions include the glade near the old stables at Clavadatsch and the section after the crossing of the cross-country ski trail and the winter hiking trail at Crap da la Turba. The tour’s highest point is the “Muotta da Güvè” viewing platform. Don’t forget to take a break and enjoy the spectacular views of the lake. The way back leads along another route above “Vaüglia”.

This moderately difficult trail leads through wintry Alpine forest to Muotta da Güvè at 2,036 metres above sea level. You will be rewarded with a pristine natural environment and captivating views over Lake Sils, the majestic mountain scenery, into the largely untouched Val Fedoz and the famous Val Fex as well as across the wintry Upper Engadine. The route is suitable for snowshoers in good physical condition.
