Mt. Maselnik is located at the beginning of the mountain chain surrounding the lake in the Lužnica Valley. The prominent summit of this mountain offers splendid views of the Soča Valley, Julian Alps and all the way to the Dolomites Mountain range if the visibility is good.

At the parking lot in front of the Kuhinja Mountain pasture take the marked trail leading past the Kuhinja and Kašina Mountain pastures to the Leskovca Mountain pasture located beneath your destination. Follow the marked trail towards Mt. Krn. This winding trail starts winding with a gradual ascent and continues with a steeper section that ends at the level section of the trail. At this section, you come across a boulder which serves as a marker. The mark to the right shows the trail for Mt. Rdeči rob, whilst the mark to the left shows the trail to Mt. Krn. The initial section of the trail is routed over rocky terrain, whilst the following sections are routed over partially grassy terrain. The trail leads to the mountain pass where an unmarked trail turns to the left towards the summit of Mt. Maselnik. On this mountain pass, views open past the lake in the Lužnica Valley to Mt. Vrh nad Peski. You can get to the top of Mt. Maselnik along several unmarked trails which were predominantly made by sheep. On the summit you can enjoy in splendid views of the mountain pastures beneath Mt. Krn, Soča Valley, and of the summits in the wider area.
On your return to the mountain pass you can also descend to the small lake which provides pleasant refreshment during the summer months.
You return along the same trail you came from.

At the parking lot, start following the signs that take you past the Kuhinja, Kašina and Leskovca Mountain pastures. After approximately 60 minutes of walking you arrive to the junction where a trail to the right leads towards the Sleme Mountain pasture and the trail straight ahead leads to the Lužnica Valley. The trail is well-worn and includes alternating relatively steep sections. At the mountain pass above the lake in the Lužnica Valley, a trail and several animal trails turn uphill to the left towards the top of Mt. Maselnik. Take the trail you find the most comfortable. Directions are simple because of the well-visible summit and the short ascent.

Basic mountaineering equipment is adequate in dry conditions, with emphasis on good footwear with well-profiled soles. During the winter months, the trail requires complete winter equipment.

The trail is safe and without problems in normal conditions.
The tour is partially routed along an easy hiking trail. Use of the hiking trails is at your own risk!

From the mountain pass, you ascend to Mt. Maselnik along an unmarked trail. The terrain is very dynamic and during the summer months covered with grass which is why caution is advised.

From Mt. Maselnik you can continue along the Lužnica Valley across Mt. Batognica to Mt. Krn. In this way you make a nice circular tour.
On return, you can prolong your tour by visiting the summits of Mt. Rdeči rob and Mt. Škofič (additional 2 h of walking).

From the town of Kobarid, drive along the regional road towards the village of Vrsno where you continue . From the village of Vrsno, continue along a narrow winding road towards the village of Krn from where you continue to the parking lot in front of the Kuhinja Mountain pasture.
