Description

From the parking lot in front of the Kuhinja Mountain pasture you follow the signs pointing to the right towards the Leskovca Mountain pasture. At the Leskovca Mountain pasture, the comfortable cart trail turns into a well-marked and well-worn hiking trail which takes you to the junction at a level section of the trail where you can notice the sign for Mt. Krn/Mt. Rdeči rob. Directions towards Mt. Rdeči rob are simple due to the prominence of the mountain. From beneath the wall of the mountain you ascend to the ridge where the trail turns to the right towards the top of Mt. Rdeči rob.

From the top of the mountain you descend back to the mountain pass and turn to the right along the non-marked but well-worn trail towards the north-west. You reach the top of Mt. Škofič along the hiking trail marked with cairns which is more or less routed along the ridge. Along the trail, you can notice quite a few remnants of World War I.

The last part of the ascent to Mt. Škofič requires caution due to the gravel terrain which can be slippery. This wonderful sightseeing mountain awards you with splendid view of the Lužnica Valley and, in case of nice weather, all of the prominent mountains of the Julian Alps, Western Julian Alps, Dolomites Mountain range, Karavanke Mountain chain and Kamnik-Savinja Alps.

You return to the starting point along the same trail you came from.

Directions

This tour starts at the parking lot in front of the Kuhinja Mountain pasture where you start following the signs for the Leskovca Mountain pasture. Above the Leskovca Mountain pasture the cart trail which also serves as the access road to the mountain pastures turns into an unmarked hiking trail leading along the Lužnica Valley and further to Mt. Krn. After approximately 90 minutes of walking you arrive to a level section where signs on a large boulder direct you to the right towards the well-visible red summit. From this junction, there are no markings along the trail all the way to the top of Mt. Rdeči rob, which means that you have to follow the scarce stone cairns. Directions are simple because your first destination is always well-visible. You have to follow the trail leading left beneath the rocky edge. The first part of the ascent ends on a mountain pass where a trail to the right leads to the top of Mt. Rdeči rob and the trail to the left, marked with stone cairns, leads to Mt. Škofič.

Along the pointy ridge you first ascend to the summit of Mt. Rdeči rob where you find a miniature Aljaž tower. At the top, you can enjoy in marvellous views of the Lužnica Valley above which you can notice your next destination – Mt. Škofič. The larger part of the trail runs along the ridge. The last part of the ascent requires some caution because it is routed along rocky terrain which can be slippery.

The top of Mt. Škofič offers splendid views of the wider area to all four directions.

You return along the same trail you came from.

Equipment

Because the trail is at some sections routed along rocky terrain, we recommend you to wear hiking footwear with well-profiled soles.

Safety instructions

At the level section beneath Mt. Rdeči rob, the trail becomes more difficult to follow, however, the prominence of the summit makes directions simple. You require some sense of orientation for the trail from the mountain pass to Mt. Škofič, but the well-visible peak of the mountain makes directions simple.

The last 50 metres of the ascent are routed along gravel terrain which requires caution while ascending or descending.

The tour is partially routed along an easy hiking trail. Use of the hiking trails is at your own risk!

Tips

During the summer months, there is a Hop On Hop Off shuttle bus running to the starting point: schedule.

The level section of the trail beneath Mt. Rdeči rob requires caution because you might miss the turn marked on a boulder.

Additional information

Another option to climb to Mt. Rdeči rob is to turn to the right after the junction for Mt. Rdeči rob and ascend to the mountain pass between the mentioned summit and the nearby Stador Mountain pasture instead of turning to the left beneath the rocky ridge. The trail is only partially worn. From the mountain pass, follow the trail along the southern side of Mt. Rdeči rob to the start of the ridge. An easy ascent along the ridge to the left takes you to the top of Mt. Rdeči rob. From the top, you descend along a narrow ridge to the mountain pass and continue along the mentioned trail towards Mt. Škofič.

Directions

If you come from the town of Tolmin, turn to the right towards the village of Kamno. In the centre of this village, turn to the left towards the town of Kobarid. After approximately 100 metres from the centre of the village you come across a steep road turning uphill towards the village of Vrsno. After a nine-kilometre-long ascent along a narrow road you arrive to the Kuhinja Mountain pasture.

If you come from the town of Kobarid, follow the road towards the village of Drežnica. After you cross the Napoleon’s bridge across the Soča River, turn to the right. Continue to the village of Ladra where you turn towards the village of Vrsno. The road from the town of Kobarid to the starting point is 12 kilometres long. The road from the village of Vrsno to the mountain pasture is very narrow.

Public transportation

You can only get to the starting point at the Kuhinja Mountain pasture by car, except for the months from June to September when you can also get there by taking the Hop On Hop Off shuttle bus: schedule.
