Description

This tour starts on the Kanin ski slope which you will leave at the Prevala Mountain from where you will ski beneath the mighty peaks called Lopa, Hudi Vršič and Velika Črnelska špica to the centre of the Rombonski podi Plateau beneath the foothills of Mt. Rombon (Veliki vrh). You will cross Mt.  Čukla and continue skiing to the Goričica Mountain pasture (1336 m) where the fun on skis ends. From this mountain pasture you usually return to the town of Bovec on foot.

Directions
The tour actually starts at Station A of the Kanin cableway but you will shorten the most difficult part of the tour by taking a half-hour-drive to Station D of the Kanin cableway at the altitude of 2200 metres. Here, you can also take the Prevala chair lift to the highest point of the tour – the Sedlo Mountain pass. You can also reach this point on skis along the edge of the ski slope. From the Sedlo Mountain pass you can comfortably ski back to the Prevala Mountain pass (2061 m). From here, continue along the slope beneath the mighty peaks Lopa and Hudi Vršič towards the Velika Černelska špica peak. You will ski horizontally to the slope for the most of the time. Beneath the Velika Černelska špica peak we recommend more experienced skiers to put on their crampons because the ascent to the top is quite steep and the snow is usually packed. Less experienced skiers can skip the skiing experience from the top of this peak and descend past the caving bivouac (cavern) along the slope towards the foothills of Mt. Rombon. At this point you can shorten the tour by skiing down a narrow rocky cutting to the Goričica Mountain pasture.

We do not recommend climbing to the top of Mt. Rombon because the slope from the foothills to the sunnit is very steep and exposed to avalanches. From the sinkhole beneath Mt. Rombon, continue skiing to the foothills of the sightseeing Mt. Čukla (1767 m). We advise you to reserve approximately 10 minutes in order to ascend to this peak because you will be awarded with a nice slope for skiing, however, caution is still advised. Stop skiing down the slope approximately 100 metres before the slope ends by turning downhill to the right. Otherwise, you will find yourself above an overhanging and partially precipitous area. Continue skiing past the former Italian field hospital from World War I (cavern) and through a small forest to the hunting lodge on the Goričica Mountain pasture. If snow conditions make it possible you can ski through the forest for approximately another 200 metres of altitude difference to the first mule trail crossing the hiking trail. From here, you usually have to walk to the centre of Bovec because the slope is rocky and quite exposed to the sun, which is why the snow quickly melts. It will take you approximately 60 minutes of walking to arrive to the centre of Bovec.

Equipment

Warm and waterproof clothing, ski touring skins, avalanche rescue kit, crampons and the ice-axe (if you intend to climb to the top of the Velika Črnelska špica peak and if the slope beneath it is iced-over), waterproof mountaineering footwear (for the hike from the Goričica Mountain pasture to the town of Bovec).

Safety instructions
We absolutely do not recommend you to take this tour if increased snow avalanche risk was announced.

On the Rombonski podi Plateau you have to be cautious when skiing because this area includes plenty of hidden Karst precipices.

Because of the rocky and partially forest-covered terrain we advise you not to ski from the Goričica Mountain pasture to the town of Bovec even if snow conditions are good.

Tips

Because of the length and dynamics of the tour we recommend you to get to the starting point by taking the Kanin cableway.

Additional information
It is appropriate to take this tour from March onwards because the slopes are prone to avalanches due to skiing.

If you are physically well-prepared you can also ski from the top of the Velika Černelska špica peak (2332 m), however, you have to consider that the ascent to this peak requires crampons and the ice-axe.

If the weather rapidly deteriorates you can shorten the tour to the Goričica Mountain pasture by skiing down the so called Rupa.
