Description

Roblek mountain hut has an almost iconic status amidst the Slovenian people. Though many might have never climbed up to this stunningly beautiful viewpoint-hut, the name "Roblek" is widely known due to hugely popular song  sung by Avsenik brothers Ensemble from nearby Begunje.

Since Mt. Begunjščica is deeply connected to the life  of this village, the proper way to start this hike is in Draga valley. From the Draga Inn, the trail follows a forest road alongside a lively mountain stream. The road gets steeper and steeper, before a trail branches of to the forest on the left. Soon, the forest opens to the idyllic pastures of Planinca from where the steep southern  slopes of Mt. Begunjščica can be admired. Within ten minutes, the hike brings you to Poljška pastures mountain hut and the end of the forest road. From here, the forest trail zig-zags steeply upwards through the mountain forest. Finally the green curtain of forests ends, and stunning views suddenly open in front of you. The friendly Roblek greets you from above, and welcomes you to it's sunny terrace.

Directions

Follow the gravel forest road ascending north from Draga Inn (Gostišče Draga). You will be passing by a drinking water catchment area on your right hand side and colourful beehives on your left-hand side. Right after passing by a rock face on your left-hand side (memorial plaque), the road turns sharply to the left. Continue walking on the road and ignore the trail crossing the river stream (Shepherds trail). Follow the gravel road and the lively stream up to the first wooden bridge. Cross the bridge and walk up to the second one. Follow the main gravel road further, ignoring the cart-track leading left across the stream. The road approaches another rock face and begins to ascent quite steeply. Soon you meet the third bridge, while the steep gradient continues. After reaching the "S" shaped bend, be attentive of a forest trail branching of into the forest on your left hand side. Leave the gravel road and start ascending on a narrow trail through the forest. Soon you will meet the road again, simply cross it and walk straight ahead into forest again. Few minutes later, cross the road again and walk straight ahead into forest. The road now branches off to the right, while you continue walking straight ahead (towards west). After a longer stretch of forest a large meadow appears in front of you.  This is the lower end of Planinca alpine pastures. Climb alongside the pastures on the waymarked trail leading up towards a large herdsmen's house.

Meeting the herdsmen's house, return back to the gravel road leading west. Soon you will find yourself back in the forest, and the road will level soon. Another large herdsmen's house (Poljška planina)  suddenly appears in front of you. Walk past the house (or stop for a refreshment), and find a wider trail leading upwards into the forest. Many short-cuts soon branch away from the principal track. You can choose to follow them, or use the original (more gradual, but longer) trail. After about 45 minutes of walking up through the forest the forest will become less dense. Ignore the narrow trail branching off to the right-hand side and follow the main path further. In few minutes you will find yourself on a wide open meadow featuring wonderful views of Mt. Stol and the Julian Alps on the other side. Your goal - Roblek mountain hut - is situated right above you on the right hand side.

Equipment

Roblek hut is fully supplied and open throughout the year (off-season only weekends). There are fresh water springs at Planinca and Poljška Planina pastures, and an restaurant in Draga. Nevertheless, pack a water bottle and a rain jacket.

Safety instructions

This a classic approach to Roblek hut with hardly any safety risks. In wet weather, the forest trail from Poljška planina pastures to Roblek can be slippery.

Tips

Descending back down to the valley, it's well worth to turn left at the first junction beneath Roblekov dom and visit the nearby remnants of the alpine manganese mines.

Additional information
On sunny weekends - regardles of the season -  this hike can be very popular. If you don't like crowds, (and if you have an oppurtunity), choose a week day for the hike. If you are not the fittest hiker - and you would still like to see the Roblek hut  - you can shorten the hike by driving to Poljška planina alpine pastures. Usually the forest road is well kept, so you don't necessarily need a 4x4 vehicle. There is no better soundtrack for this hike than the popular Večer na Robleku, a merry ode to youth, mountain freedom and the joy of life.

Directions

Exit the A2 motorway (Ljubljana - Karavanke tunnel) at exits 5 (Brezje), 4 (Radovljica) or 3 (Lesce), than follow the signposts for Begunje na Gorenjskem. Entering the village, drive straight ahead towards the end of the village. The main road continues to Tržič, while you turn left for Draga. Pass by the ruins of mighty Kamen castle and drive up the valley for 1,5 km to Draga Inn (Gostišče Draga).

Public transportation
Apart from Hop-On Hop-Off Bus operating in peak season (July-August), there are no public buses to Draga valley. The nearest frequent bus stop is in Begunje (3 km) away. Lamberg trail represents a nice alternative to walking from Begunje to Draga on the road.
Parking

The parking area next to Draga Inn is reserved for their guests and visitors. Park left of the road just before the bridge, or drive for another 100 meters up the gravel road to reach the second parking area near a former gravel pit and water catchment area.
