Architecture, mountain experiences and an amazing panorama: This summer is well worth seeing at the Zugspitze

The new ZUGSPITZE CABLE CAR is to be completed on Germany's highest mountain by December 2017. This technical masterpiece is yet another reason for an excursion to 2,962 m above sea level. Visitors still enjoy easy access, whilst experiencing exciting insights into alpine engineering, as well as the 360° summit view, via the rack and pinion railway service and glacier lift. Bayerischen Zugspitzbahn cableway installations also make nature and cultural experiences comfortably accessible for everyone in the hiking regions of Garmisch-Classic and Panoramic Mount Wank.

After bidding farewell to the old Eibsee Cable Car in April 2017, construction work on the spectacular new ZUGSPITZE CABLE CAR are in full swing. The country’s highest building site is undoubtedly a “must see” for technologically-savvy mountain fans. Many other visitors, however, also benefit from the opportunity of seeing a new landmark in the making. The Bayerische Zugspitzbahn has ensured that ascents via rack and pinion railway and glacier lift are always comfortably guaranteed, with a new mountain locomotive and extended timetable. Day trippers can access the Zugspitze Peak and its famous views of around 400 mountain peaks in four alpine countries from Eibsee Zugspitze train station every half an hour. Twice a day, interested visitors will also be able to appreciate the incredible dimensions of the record-breaking cableway project during free construction site tours. Those wanting to keep abreast of developments from afar, will find regular updates and up-to-date pictures from three webcams on zugspitze.de/bautagebuch (construction journal).

Glacier feeling in high summer and culinary delights at the Zugspitzplatt

This summer, the Zugspitzplatt is a central port of call for culinary refreshments, before or after tackling a visit to the summit. At an altitude of 2,600 m, where the rack and pinion railway and glacier lift meet, mountain enthusiasts have the pleasant choice between the Sonnalpin self-service restaurant, the modern-glazed Glacier Garden and the recently opened, rustic Suppenkar. Revitalised with fresh energy, the fascinating world of ice and snow as well as the wide choice of adventures on the Zugspitzplatt can be enjoyed all the more intensively. Unimpaired by the construction work on the peak, families can toboggan here on a natural snow run, balance and climb at the Zugspitz Alpinpark, take part in free glacier and technology tours, walk along the “Glacier Trail”, or visit the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s Visitation.

Prices summer 2024: The Zugspitze ticket costs Euro 72.00 for adults. Attractive family discounts are available on all cable car tickets for families with children.

Garmisch Classic Hiking Region: hiking tours with assisted ascents

*The original alpine pastures and rocky landscapes between the Alpspitze, Kreuzeck and Hausberg form a diverse hiking paradise, made accessible to all by the Kreuzeckbahn and Alpspitzbahn cable cars. Thanks to the mountain cableway services, families and day trippers can access the easy hiking trails, geological nature trail or the path to Höllentalklamm Gorge. The more ambitious head from the cable car top station to high alpine mountain and climbing tours in the Wetterstein limestone. As a special service, the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn has compiled a list of the most beautiful hiking routes below the Alpspitze. The tour tips in every level of difficulty are available to download on zugspitze.de/tourentipps and can also be found in practical postcard format at cable car cash desks.
A highpoint for both novice and experienced mountain enthusiasts takes viewers literally into the depths at the top station of the Alpspitzbahn cable car. Perched over a thousand meter abyss, the AlpspiX viewing platform opens up views of the Zugspitze, Waxensteine, Alpspitz-North Wall and down into the wild Höllental Valley. Your efforts can be rewarded with a break for refreshments at the welcoming Café Kandahar 2 in the base station of the Kreuzeckbahn cable car, where hikers and day trippers savour sweet and savoury snacks, coffee and drinks on the sun terrace, with views of the blossoming World Cup slope.

Prices summer 2024: The Garmisch-Classic Ticket costs Euro 35.50 for adults and includes either a round trip with the Alpspitz-/Hochalm and Kreuzeckbahn cable cars, or a mountain ascent and descent with the Alpspitz-/Hochalmbahn cable car, or a mountain ascent and descent with the Kreuzeckbahn.

Panoramic Mount Wank: The best prospects for art and culture

Sun, family, excursion and festival mountain: The 1,780 metre high Mount Wank goes under many names - and with good reason. The Wankbahn cable car whisks families and senior citizens effortlessly to the summit plateau with its numerous hiking trails and panoramic views of the Esterberg, Ammer, Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains. Relaxed experiences of nature can be combined this summer with arty and festive moods during an array of diverse events. The popular Bavarian evenings will be relocating from the Zugspitze to the Sonnenalm on Mount Wank this summer. The traditional folk evening continues with its tried and tested formula of great hospitality, lively music and Bavarian delicacies in this atmospheric setting. The price for adults is Euro 59.00, which includes the cable car ride and buffet food (dates on 6th May, 3rd & 24th June, 22nd & 29th July, 5th August). Yet more music - a convivial crossover from Bavarian pop to funky hip-hop to energetic ska - is offered at the Mountain Festival on Mount Wank on 26th August. With a reputation that now extends well beyond the borders of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, this extraordinary festival will be inspiring audiences for its fourth successive year. Promised, not least, by a top notch line-up including Pam Pam Ida, Mundwerk Crew, Matakustix and Django S., who will rock the open-air stage near the top station of the Wankbahn cable car from 14 to 22 hrs.
Other cultural highlights in the summer of 2017 include Johanni on Mount Wank, Music on the Mountain, Movies on Mount Wank, a concert by the Trentino Climber’s Choir and Yoga on Mount Wank. Those interested can find an overview of individual dates on zugspitze.de/veranstaltungen.

Prices summer 2024: A mountain ascent and descent with the Wankbahn costs Euro 27.50 for adults. Single journeys, such as from the top station down to the valley, or up the mountain from the middle station are available from the cash desk at the base station of the Wankbahn cable car.
