Brief description

Kurtagića Dolac is one of the most beautiful valleys on Kamešnica Mt. It is located at 1460 MASL, just between the peaks of Planinica (1612 MASL), Kolebajka (1535 MASL) and Trovrsi (1645 MASL). Kurtagića Dolac is only accessible through a narrow passage towards the northeast, which makes it magically hidden. The mountain meadow (or dolac in local language) is 350m long and 150m wide. It is surrounded mainly by thick beech and fir trees.

Description
From Kurtagića Dolac, the trail goes uphill, becoming steeper, through more beech forests. It bypasses Planinica peak and heads to a ridge, follows it to Burnjača peak (1770 MASL), and continues towards Garjata peak. This peak is located in the middle of the mountain range, and it offers a spectacular view of the whole Kamešnica Mt. The trail leads further to Bunarić, across the ridge. Bunarić is a source of fresh drinking water throughout the year. At this point, this trail meets the other trail which leads from Korita. Another shelter, also built by the Dinaridi Mountain Association, is at the Milčić Bunari location, on Kamešnica Mt., located just next to the drinking water source, on the trails' crossings.

In just half an hour walk from the shelter, you can reach Kamešnica Peak (1809 MASL), Konj Peak (1856 MASL), or, through a ridge, towards Bliznički Brig (1690 MASL), Garjata (1773 MASL), Burnjača (1770 MASL), all the way up to a mountain hut in Kurtagića Dolac (1450 MASL), or even downhill to Gornja or Donja Korita. Above the aforementioned shelter is Gušinova Kažela peak (1654 MASL)—an amazing lookout. The trail again becomes steep, leading uphill, through juniper bushes, to Kamešnica peak. This peak offers an amazing view over the Bosnian mountains, Livanjsko Polje, and the Dinaric Alps in general.

The trail leads further across the ridge, up and down, to the highest peak— Konj, which also offers spectacular views in all directions, especially towards Buško Blato.

If you decide to go further, the trail descends to barren karst land, then through burned forest, and finally across a ridge to a fresh water source—Pešino Vrelo. This source (located at 1350 MASL) is yet another one which is used to provide fresh drinking water to local inhabitants. The elders remember how they used to live on Kamešnica for months, and watch their livestock grazing. It was the Pešino Vrelo source, among other fresh water sources on the mountain, that allowed them to water the livestock. The source is active even today and is still used by mountaineers and hikers—not just from neighbouring places, but also from all around Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia. In 2007, a mountain lodge was built near Pešino Vrelo. A month after the lodge was completed, water troughs were built as well. The Kamešnica Mountain Association initiated this, and association members spent several weeks building the lodge. Today, the lodge is open for all mountaineers and good-willed people. From the lodge, the well-marked and trodden trail leads to the village of Podgradina.

Directions
Vaganjsko Sedlo is also reachable through the village of Prolog, but the road is in very poor condition, and is barely passable. If you decide to take this way, you should take a left turn and follow it until the crossroad. There, the gravel road leads right towards Rosni Dolac (passable for cars, and in decent condition), to the elevation point of 1158 MASL. The left turn leads to an elevation point of 1409 MASL. At the end of both ways, there are lay-bys as well as parking space for several cars.

The ascent from Rosni Dolac leads mainly through beech forests. Within an hour, you will reach the remains of an old mountain hut, and after that, in 30 minutes, you will reach Kurtagića Dolac, where there is a shelter built by the Dinaridi Mountain Association.

Kurtagića Dolac is also accessible through the parking lot at Gola Kosa. The trail marking starts there, and after 15 minutes it meets the trail from Rosni Dolac, and follows it all the way to Kurtagić Dolac.

Additional information

Directions

The trail markings start at Rosni Dolac—an integral part of the Vaganj mountain pass. Vaganj is accessible by car, through Sinj and Han on Cetina. On the crossroad just after Han, you should take the right turn for the village of Gljev, and then the next left turn for Vaganj. On the road to Vaganj, there is a border crossing called Bili Brig. After the crossing, you should continue towards the abandoned Heidi Motel. That spot is also the location of the Bosnian Border Police. They will let mountaineers pass without any problems. After the border crossing, you should proceed to Vaganjsko Sedlo, and an old hut, and then take the right turn just next to it (gravel road).

Public transportation

Access to Rosni Dolac is possible through both Livno and Sinj.

Parking

At the lay-by.
