The holiday destinations of the Attersee-Attergau region are located in the heart of Austria between the capital cities Salzburg and Linz in a traffic-favorable position, with direct access to the highway (Westautobahn A1) ad also not far from the Bavarian capital of Munich. The region is also characterized by its pure air and crystal-clear waters with drinking water quality as a guarantor for sustainability and nature adventure, thus offering a place of retreat for deceleration and relaxation all year long.

Being the second largest regions of the Salzkammergut, it offers more than 300 tourist accommodations with a capacity of about 7,200 beds (including camping), yielding about 670,000 overnight stays per year. Since the merger, performed in the year of 2019, the Attersee-Attergau Tourism Association consists of twelve tourism districts: Attersee am Attersee, Berg im Attergau, Frankenmarkt, Nußdorf am Attersee, St. Georgen im Attergau, Schörfling am Attersee, Seewalchen am Attersee, Steinbach am Attersee, Strass im Attergau, Unterach am Attersee, Vöcklamarkt and Weyregg am Attersee, comprising six information offices with a total of 15 permanent members of staff, taking care of the international marketing of the Attersee-Attergau brand, guest service, the organization and execution of numerous events, thus also being full-service-information centers concerning requests, booking and ticketing.

With a water area of 46.2 sqm and a depth of 169 meters, Lake Attersee ranks third among the country´s inland lakes. It is also the home of Austria´s oldest sailing club and is well-known among yachtsmen for its so-called “Rosenwind” (favorable wind for sailing). In addition, Lake Attersee also is an internationally popular all-year diver´s paradise, offering an abundance of possibilities for all water buffs, such as the astonishing underwater „pile-dwelling diving experience“ and „river-snorkeling“.
At the south end of Lake Attersee, the cliffs of the Höllengebirge (1,862 m) and the Schafberg (1,782) embrace the lake and invite you to embark on a climbing tour. Or try the more demanding viae ferratae or a boulder-areas. The remaining areas of the lakefront are surrounded by gentle hills and forested mountains, offering a pictures-que paradise for hiking and biking tours as well as an impressive panoramic view from the observation tower up on the Lichtenberg and from the observation deck in Unterach. Fascinating mountainbike tours, such as the „KABONG“ and the “Berge-Seen-eBike-Trail” are perfectly apt for leisurely bikers. Internationally known are also the outstanding racing bike events, such as the „King of the Lake“ and „Race around Austria“.

And, did you know, that already 5,000 years ago the first settlers on the shores of Lake Attersee drove trunks into the lake floor, to support and protect the houses erected on top of them: the pile-dwellers. About a thousand years later, the Romans also discovered Lake Attersee as a suitable place for themselves, thus laying the foundation for what we today label as “summer retreat”. This circumstance also lured the world-famous painter, Gustav Klimt, to the shores of Lake Attersee, at the beginning of the 20th century, where many of his 50 well-known landscape paintings were created. Today the region is also famous far beyond its borders for the high-quality cultural events with international stars performing at the Attergauer Kultursommer, the Gustav Mahler Festival or the International Nikolaus Harnoncourt Tage.

The Salzkammergut satisfies the longing for vitality and zest for life. It extends over the three Austrian federal states of Upper Austria, Salzburg and Styria. The „Salzkammergut Tourismus-Marketing GmbH“, as the umbrella organization, performs the work necessary in this regard for the 54 districts in 8 tourism destinations. The more than one million guests and about 5 million overnight stays per year secure the entire Salzkammergut one of the three top places in Austrian Tourism.
