With the house "Kohlgasse 7" Arnstadt owns one of the most important habitations of the Bach family. In no other "Bach city" in Germany a house is preserved that is directly related to Johann Sebastian Bach, in which he went in and out and in which he probably lived as well.

The frontage of the property "Kohlgasse 7" was built after the great fire in 1581. The widow Elizabeth Kannewurfin, who owned the land before 1687, inherited the house and some acres of land to the court musician Johann Christoph Bach, the twin brother of Johann Sebastian Bach's father.

When the young 18-year-old Johann Sebastian Bach came to Arnstadt and his uncle had already died, he lived in this house with his aunt Maria Elisabeth Bach and her children - including Johann Ernst Bach, who was not only related to Johann-Sebastian but a very close friend. The cousin was also the one who recommended Johann-Sebastian to the "New Church", where he later worked as an organist. After all the "Bach-House" was in the possession of the Bach family for 45 years.
